UB40 technically covered a reggae version by Tony Tribe, Jack.

Can't recall the orig either but Diamond plays it reggae style now while counting his royalties

Never a UK hit, until the dreadful UB40 version (itself a cover of a cover by Tony Tribe) in 1983.
Great song though.

Yes ive seen Neil Diamond several times and he always plays it reggae style now. Strangley The monkees 'Im a believer' which he wrote, he now plays as a ballad and it sounds great.

Didn't even realise the ND version had been released as a single tbh, always assumed it was one of those obscure album tracks that others had taken to cover.

Thanks for the heads up, Sir.

I went and checked it out: Mr Tribe's version is a little gem and beats the bollocks off the UB40 version.

Neil Diamond wrote this in 1967......

The song was covered by several artists shortly after Diamond's recording was released. In 1968 the Dutch singer Peter Tetteroo (from the band Tee Set) had a hit with a cover of the song in The Netherlands. Tony Tribe covered the song in 1969 in a reggae-influenced style. Fourteen years later, UB40 recorded it in 1983 in a lighter reggae style;

Never been a huge fan of UB40, but their version isn't that bad, is it?

There was a bit of resentment towards them for taking old ska/rocksteady tunes and making them into hits, but they made quite a difference to the original artists... Lord Creator for example being homeless on the streets of Kingston when he got his royalty cheque from UB40 and being brought out of poverty...

Really liking that Kingston Town vibe.

[Pedant] Not too sure about the references above to "reggae". I'm hearing Ska and Rock Steady but nothing I'd call reggae. [/Pedant]
