Happy Jack
I must have been 11 when this was in the charts and apparently a big hit. I had no idea. http://youtu.be/BeJ55sUacPM
Mickeyboro
UB40 technically covered a reggae version by Tony Tribe, Jack. Can't recall the orig either but Diamond plays it reggae style now while counting his royalties
casapete
Never a UK hit, until the dreadful UB40 version (itself a cover of a cover by Tony Tribe) in 1983. Great song though. * Beaten to it ^^^^^^ Edited March 10, 2017 by casapete
bonzodog
Yes ive seen Neil Diamond several times and he always plays it reggae style now. Strangley The monkees 'Im a believer' which he wrote, he now plays as a ballad and it sounds great. Hobbayne
It wasnt that big a hit. Apparently it only got to 62 in the US and 72 in Australia.
KevB
Didn't even realise the ND version had been released as a single tbh, always assumed it was one of those obscure album tracks that others had taken to cover.
skankdelvar
UB40 technically covered a reggae version by Tony Tribe, Jack.
Thanks for the heads up, Sir. I went and checked it out: Mr Tribe's version is a little gem and beats the bollocks off the UB40 version. taunton-hobbit
Neil Diamond wrote this in 1967...... The song was covered by several artists shortly after Diamond's recording was released. In 1968 the Dutch singer Peter Tetteroo (from the band Tee Set) had a hit with a cover of the song in The Netherlands. Tony Tribe covered the song in 1969 in a reggae-influenced style. Fourteen years later, UB40 recorded it in 1983 in a lighter reggae style;

There was a bit of resentment towards them for taking old ska/rocksteady tunes and making them into hits, but they made quite a difference to the original artists... Lord Creator for example being homeless on the streets of Kingston when he got his royalty cheque from UB40 and being brought out of poverty... Happy Jack
Really liking that Kingston Town vibe. [Pedant] Not too sure about the references above to "reggae". I'm hearing Ska and Rock Steady but nothing I'd call reggae. [/Pedant]

ivansc
I have always felt totally meh about UB40, but at least if the royalties ended up in the right hands they did SOME good. Well don Allie and co
taunton-hobbit
Makes a very pleasant change for any money sent to a 'reggae' artist to actually benefit them........
