Blown mesa boogie - 1x18

Hello people

I have a bit of a monster rig, which I dragged out last night for an impending mini tour with Deeper Purple.

The rig is Mesa Boogie - Bass 400+, along with the old diesel cabs - 2x10 with horn, and 1x18.

The problem is, about 2 years ago, the original EV 18" speaker started rattling very badly (a very unpleasant metallic distortion). In my hurry to get a replacement, I bought an Eminance Definimax 4018 LF.

I always suspected that this was not a patch on the original speaker - and last night in a rehearsal room, it really noticed. The 2x10 completely over-powers the 1x18 - you have to bend down to appreciated it is acctually working, and the resultant sound mix of the two cabs is very toppy.

So, does anyone have a suggestion as to an appropriate replacement? Should I try and get the original speaker repaired even??? (although I did hear that re-coning etc, can be problematice).....
I think the EV was 8ohm 400w. Ideally I would like to get something that would make the same noise as the old rig used to!

Help!! Thanks.....

The problem is that the cabinet was tuned with the EV in mind. You may find it hard to replace the EV but it can probably be repaired. Try http://www.audioloudspeakers.co.uk/boultons.shtml they quote £70 for an EV 18 repair. Alternatively Wembley Loudspeakers http://wembleyloudspeaker.com/

The specs of the EV 18 and 4018LF are quite close, so cab wise they're interchangeable. The 4018LF has twice the Pe and Xmax, so it's considerably more durable. However, the EV has good on-axis response to at least 3kHz, the 4018LF to only 1kHz. That's why the OP can't hear the 4018LF over the 210 top. The 4018LF will walk all over the EV in the lows, and the 210 is all that's necessary to handle the mids and highs, but to function well together they'd have to be crossed over in a bi-amp configuration. A 200Hz crossover would be appropriate.

Update - I emailed both companies. Wembley Loud speakers never replied! The guys in Norwich did, and turned my speaker around in a week (£80 plus £15P&P). The speaker has just been through 3 two hour sets with Deeper Purple, and is as good as new! Thanks for the advice.

[/quote]I wanted to be fair to both companies but I have also found the Norwich guys to be great. I am really glad you are sorted
