Paulo Silva Posted October 24, 2008 Share Posted October 24, 2008 (edited) I dont want to start any riot but you all sound more closed minded then my fellow portuguese bassist! the use of ERB's is limited, I only use my 9 string in my band because the guitarist has a 8 string guitar. the low F# (0.165) string creates new sonic textures that helps a band stand appart in the music scene. imagine a mix of Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan and Intronaut. the higher notes F 0.22 and A# 0.14 are great to do chords and to back up a single guitarist in a band situation. there is space for everyone in the music business and there is no need for bashing the ERB players. alexclaber Posted October 24, 2008 Share Posted October 24, 2008 I love playing chords on the bass - they have their own unique sound, not like a guitar and I'm sure that is maintained even with the thinner strings on an ERB because the scale length has such an effect upon tone. For me five strings and twenty four frets is enough (in fact four strings and twenty four frets is enough for the chordal work though the extra lower string comes in very handy on the groove side of things) but I can see why more strings could be of benefit for some. I also like how an extra-long scale (36" in my case) separates the tone of the bass even further from the guitar allowing you to do guitarry things but maintain a unique identity and sonic position. Everytime the 'ERB' discussion comes up, I am so surprised at the narrow minded views displayed by some of us! I have been playing 6ers and 7ers for years now and not once ever been in a situation where i couldnt make full use of the instrument, even playing covers.. I actually find them easier to play than my P basses that have never left the house! The new band is really gonna allow me to make use of the complete pallete the instrument offers, thats for sure. I think he said that EBMM were reluctant to make another because of all the one-off tooling costs. Would love to be corrected though. I have a C# 0.195 and with a guitar with 8 string tuned with a low F#, the C# is very helpfull and it brings the most fullfiling low end you can ever imagine!
