i f***ing love that tone - such a dirty valve growl, got to love it. He's all over it  class act indeed
Totally. Right I'm away to see if I can dial in something even close to his sound right now (sorry neighbours). :)

Hooray to youtube/t'internet eh.
I remember years ago trying to figure out these very same riffs (same gig) sat on my living room carpet, video remote in hand, frustratingly jogging back and forth... and giving up.

Never understood why The Ox got such bad press in bass circles. The comments on the youtube clips are amazing...really slagging him off.
I always thought he was perfect to be opposite old "big nose" and complemented him and his ego really well.
He was a proper "rock bassist" and the clips show just how important spaces and silence are in playing a bass.
Sadly missed....

That's a big number!

We love the Ox. For my birthday earlier this month my lovely gf bought me that book with photos of his bass collection circa 1995/6ish (but not printed til after he died). Awesome :)

That sound was something special - Alembics and whatever was giving the fuzzzzz. I never could understand what happened to his sound later, the stuff I've heard with Warwick and Status basses just sounds thin and over effected to me...but I'm sure this is more to do with his choice of effects/signal chain than the basses themselves?

Unfortunately I fear that horrible sound he had in the last few years may have come about because he had severe hearing problems by then - it was probably the only way he could hear what he was doing over the tinnitus. He had lost much of his hearing by the time he died.

I wonder if his technique predates conventional slap?

The sound on Live at Leeds was pretty special, too (amazing considering the pissy sounds everyone else was getting at the time) and that was just a Precision and a wall of Hiwatts.

yep never get sick of seeing those vids.
i've tried emulating that sound a few times and really want to learn that whole song but haven't had the substantial time required to do it.
regarding the tone i found almost slapping the strings down onto the fretboard with your fingers works quite well, rather than the normal "brushing" of your finger across the tops of the strings for standard finger style.
so laid back playing that its annoying :)
I don't doubt that these have made their way on to here before but I've just seen them for the 1st time and I'm blown away.
(let them run for a minute and the magic will start)

Thanks for posting these again ou7shined.
I have seen them before and have used the WGFA one to learn the bass part as we do it in my band.
Great stuff isn't it? it surprised me along with all the pyrotechnics in the playing how many spaces and pauses he leaves. a masterclass in tasteful rock bass playing IMHO
I may have mentioned on here before that it was seeing some footage of The Ox with his Explorer bass standing in front of a mass of Sunn cabs belting out mighty sounds that inspired me as a callow youth to want to be a bass player.
Took until I was 40 something to finally play Wont get fooled with a band for real. i think we do a good job of it too!
perhaps I'll post it here one day.

Mike
It is off "The Kids Are Alright" DVD Special DVD Edition SVE3050 Sanctury Records.

Released in 2004 and recorded in 1979
Wonderful film.

Also worth seeing (and contains some of the same footage) is Amazing Journey. Includes a very moving interview with Roger Daltrey.

Well you get the idea. If you get the double CD with the full gig, even his tuning up sounds great!
