The grey 615 is the same as the one I've just bought...

That one there, the guy who just bought it discovered that it didn't have the stock preamp, but fortunately he liked the replacement very much. More here

So you could move it from the Basses I Regret Missing Out On pile to the Basses I Regret Selling pile?

No, this 424/414 world is where I’m at. I do worry that bb450 is unfortunately at risk. And the unfinished 350.

I know the white 350 is going to a good home - I’ve sorted that.

I took of the pick up rings today to let them anodize in gold.  Looking at the 1000 without them.... looks cool to. Now I am thinking about doing some work on another of my 1000's.. I always wanted to be able to replace the pick ups... so my idea ist: a new finish and before that... adjusting the pick up holes to the standard. Candy apple red again with vinage white Dimarzios...  maybe all black hardware..

Locked all my 4s away and persevered with 5ers.

Not as much fun as 4 strings but I think I'm being more creative using more octaves.

Looks cheap/boring - not as nice

I've always found the pickup surrounds add a touch of class. The BB basses used to be far more elegant than fenders. It's a shame they've mutated the design to be more Fender like.

Can anybody tell me what the model numbers mean?

For instance are the lower numbers "lesser" models? Are the 615/625 upgrades on the 415/425?

Expand

625 doesn’t exist…

414/415 were passive

614/615 active 3 eq, no passive mode

414/614 then replaced by 424/1024/2024 - all passive, different country of manufacture, various wood treatments and pickup variants (all based on p/j though)

modern day equivalent

434 = 414/424 (passive p/j)

734 = 614 (active p/j)

1024/2024 - bp34 (passive p/j but “posh”)

414/424/614 all 4 string

415/425/615 all 5 string
