The Yamaha BB mega-thread

My trusty pair of BB604 basses. Gave them a wipe down after a particularly sweaty gig last night, and thought they looked lovely in the autumn sunshine on my settee.

Not traditional BB shapes, but BB basses nonetheless.

The 604 (Natural finish) was my first bass, I still have it, although I've refinished it a couple of times, everything else is stock. It's a great bass, especially for the price.

I've seen pictures of him with what looked like a black one on Facebook. There was a debate as to whether it was actually black or just the red looking black under certain stage lights. Hook himself answered clearing the matter up, but I can't remember whats his answer was now.

Not a lot of of help eh? 😁

He said it was black...

It appears the BB734, and presumably 735, is available in the classic BB red and green.

I still love the coffee burst (genuinely better in the flesh than most promo pics) but that green is rather tasty.

The lack of colours was the only excuse I had for not seriously contemplating buying one.

Now, well yeah - that green is nice.

Although knowing Yamaha, you'll only get the 5er in the red and some other colour that isn't available for the 734.

Their colour options are, at best, odd. I absolutely love the metallic orange but I think it's only available on the 414.

It's great to see some more colours added to the 700 series,  classic red and green... if I was being picky , I wish they had matching headstock and back of the neck...

I've heard some whispers that Yamaha might be bringing out a new range next year.

Ooooh that is potentially exciting news! Will be their first new range since, well, we started this thread back in 2017!

Congratulations! Your first BB or long time user?

Ah it’s going back tomorrow as truss rod doesn’t work and the passive circuit cut out at rehearsal for a few mins - so yesterday found a new BBP34 on Black Friday sale which arrives Tuesday - apart from the faults the 734a was good - loved the neck and clear tones

I've not tried a P34, but I'd imagine if you liked the feel of the 734 and the passive tone then you'll like the P34.

Which colour have you gone for? If a creams one came up at the right price I'd struggle not to buy it.

As an aside, I've read that the pickups in the the 734 are the same ones that are in the P34. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes same pickups same everything except the IRA sound treatment and made in Japan as opposed to Indonesia - and better case. But yes love the passive tone. I used the 734a in passive mostly - I love a sunburst which I’ve gone for but the cream and the midnight blue are nice too- wish they did a natural finish though

really looking forward to this one - got some gigs coming up

Well in that case that's probably an expensive itch that doesn't need scratching. I've already got a 374a in (IMO gorgeous) dark coffee burst that don't intend to sell, and the jump up to a P34 probably isn't worth the outlay, unless I got rid of the 374.

While the Japanese build is likely to be exceptional, the Indonesians are none to shabby.

Talking of cases, the standard gigbags with the 374 is very high quality for the price of bass. My BBPH came with the same bag.

Good luck with the P34 👍

I’ve heard good things about the 400 series (thinking of possibly one down the line) but I wanted something of a sure thing after having last 2 brand new basses both have faults and was a really good deal - I have a superb Japanese Fender Jazz bass and in fact have never had a bad Japanese made bass - whereas I’ve had some mediocre MIAs - so after the short experience with the 734a, I’m pretty confident that the 34 will be fantastic… hopefully

Very interesting! Where did you hear this? I for one would like to see the return of the bigger body BB basses 🔥

I'm currently on the lookout for a BB424x or 1204x 👍

Wonder if the red finish is the same as the Peter Hook model? Looks like it! Would have been nice to see a few other colour options

I’d love a reissue 3000/1600…

But I doubt that’ll happen.
