So. Tomorrow the nice man in a van collects my bb1500a from the wonderful @tredderswho collected it for me from the seller who wouldn’t ship.

 

I’m even more excited with the reports that it looks basically new, and plays perfectly.

 

Worth the wait?

 

We shall see…😋

Yeah, it was 2014 I believe, and a collection only ebay deal. Sold it for twice that some time later when between jobs, and regreted ever since.

RIP Jeff Andrews, what a great bass player he was. Ironically Mike Stern has been a Yamaha artist as well for many years now.

+1. Jeff Andrews was surely one of the most accomplished bass players on planet earth. I think he never became as acclaimed as he should have because he stuck to fairly purist contemporary jazz  fusion and the NYC scene. He could very easily have done sessions, played more mainstream music and made a big name for himself like Marcus Miller has done.

 

 Maybe Mike Stern hooked Jeff up with Yamaha. I wouldn't be surprised.

He did play quite a few sessions but mainly in the 1980’s IIRC. He was definitely more of a purist and was quite close to Jaco in Jaco’s later years. Regarding the Yamaha thing it’s seems unlikely as Mike is playing his Fender in the video, he only started playing his signature Pacifica in the early 1990’s. Monster bassist who left us way too soon. A real shame. 
 

Edit @Misdee you may well be correct re Yamaha as the video is supposed to be from 96! Strange as the guitar looks like his Tele.

What sets bass players like Jeff Andrews and Marcus Miller (and Jaco, for that matter) apart is that they have a deep knowledge of jazz theory. And they also have the chops put that knowledge into practice.

 

That Yamaha BB 1500a looks and sounds a good fit for Jeff considering his mainstay was a P Bass with Jazz pickups.

It’s no surprise that Marcus has worked with some of the most influential jazz musicians in history as both producer and bass player. His work with Wayne Shorter on the High Life album was pretty remarkable. He is often though of as just a slap bass player but his playing is much much more than his sparkling Fender Jazz bass sound. If you haven’t heard the track ‘on the Milky Way Express’ off the aforementioned Wayne Shorter Album check it out. He read the part from a hand written manuscript that Mr.Shorter wrote out that was so long (wide) he needed to use a swivel chair. Great track and amazing bass part.

Just an update… it is indeed a CS job with the big blademan pick ups and the Nordstrand JC preamp - aiming to get the Wal type thing happening.

Does that combination of pups and preamp get close to Wal sound? If so, that's definitely worth clocking!

You’d have to ask Amos or Justin Chacellor 😀 There’s likely some demos up and I think it’s all tied in with mid points which can be selected. I’m not too familiar with the Wal sound to be honest.

I have the Nord JC pre in a bass, although it has a Bigman PU, not the BigBlademan.

I have also owned Wal basses in the past..

I don't sound like Justin Chancellor, nor does the bass sound like a Wal particularly....

However, if Yamaha market the bass then I will be in difficulty....

I should add that was part of the Nordstrand marketing not my thoughts on the combination👍🏼
