winterfire666
i just recently joined Preston thrashers Solitary as my 2nd band and played my first 2 gigs in the last week or so are there any other thrash players on here that don't use a pick? i have had several comments about the fact that i don't, none of them bad i was just surprised by this. im just curious on players preference in this genre anyhow heres what we do, check em out if you like that kind of thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncm0V0LjOos
bartelby
I used to play thrash, with and without a pick. If it works, who cares. After all Cliff Burton was a finger player. Nice track BTW, a bit too Pantera for me, but nice nonetheless.
No. 8 Wire
Thrash player as a student, now just a bedroom player of thrash. Looks like your predecessor played with fingers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtqlgpnRPA0 Had a great listen, really enjoyed it. I play with both a pick and fingers. I prefer fingers from the point of view that there are more dynamics, accents, etc possible, but obviously a pick is easier for stamina / fatigue / injuries. Three fingers is also good if just straight speed is needed, but I'm not too good at playing complex lines with 3.

JimBobTTD
I was in a thrash band and I would love to be in one again. Fingers for me. I did a song or two with a pick - Slayer covers - but I am not too good with a pick. Nobody ever commented on this.

winterfire666
thanks folks some great posts there im a finger player through and through although ive spoken to a lot of folk that think a pick is the only way to get the attack required, i disagree of course. im working on my two finger technique with up down strokes on each finger for the really fast stuff but im enjoying the pace generally of the stuff. dave my predecessor was a cool guy, it was a shame he had to step down due to health issues. Leonard Smalls
Our singer used to be in death metal thrashers Arceye... But we're a lot more funky than that - but still rockin'. And I usie my thumb as a plectrum and for slapping, as well as 2 or sometimes even 3 fingers. It's odd, but I can't help myself!

The very mighty Xentrix. My thrash heart belongs to them I reckon, so being as you're in Preston too then, there's a bit of love there for ya! Bolo
I thrash mostly with a pick. Some songs I'll play fingerstyle for reasons that only make sense in my head Spotify link here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2CDOlfWDOcsUREacRMfP8n?context=spotify%3Aartist%3A2CDOlfWDOcsUREacRMfP8n

dudewheresmybass
I have, and still do, in thrash and death metal bands. Fingers where I can, although sometimes I'll use a pick for speed
chrismuzz
I'm in a heavy metal band and also a thrash band. All fingers! I did try using a pick to get more of a Jason Newsted kind of vibe, but with my level of playing ability I just couldn't nail it!
christhammer666
chrismuzz im the other way round, can play with a plectrum fine but fingers NOPE.... no matter how much I try
Steve Woodcock
Not thrash per se but I have played a fair amount of prog metal and death metal over the years and still get calls to do so - in fact I'm going to be playing on a track with Dirk Verbeuren (of Megadeth etc.) in the next few weeks - and have always done so with fingers rather than pick. DangerDan
Death/extreme metal here, all fingerstyle, all the time! Though if im honest with myself, although i prefer to play with fingers, picks can be better for recording...
