lowlandtrees
So I have what I think is a cheap bow. A Cremonia *** it needs a re hair...my wife accidentally (?) dropped it down the stairs. What is a fair price to get it re haired and is it worth it and where is the best place to get this done. I stay in Central Scotland....should I send it somewhere or find somewhere local? I only use it very occasionally although I would like to learn how to bow correctly.
philparker
I have now narrowed my main bows to two: one main and one back-up, both decent quality, but I have had my cheaper bows re-haired in the past and it makes a tremendous difference - even if the re-hair cost half of what the bow was worth! I don't have a wide range of experience - I have only ever used Andrew McGill, on recommendation by many double bassists, and it cost me about £65 for a basic re-hair (I have had repairs and other jobs done) he's based in Oxfordshire. The cost reflects an excellent job and quality horse hair! The little experience I have gained, I would say don't hesitate and get a re-hair! Beer of the Bass
Whether it's worthwhile depends on how cheap your bow is, since the cost of a rehair is about the same as the price of some of the cheaper bows out there.
mart3442
Rehairs go from anywhere between £50 and £100, dependant on the quality of the Horsehair used.......
