Greg.Bassman
Hi all. I’m confused. Both of these basses (see below) are advertised as Sandberg ‘California TM4’ basses, yet each have different body shapes. I’ve taken a look at Sandberg’s website, but I am none the wiser. Are they technically two different models of TM4? BASS 1: https://www.session.de/out/pictures/master/product/1/Sandberg_California_TM4_Chambered_RW_NT.jpg BASS 2: https://www.session.de/out/pictures/master/product/1/Sandberg_California_TM4_RW_NT.jpg Basically, I’m interested in the first one (looks more reminiscent of a fender jazz); what is it’s specific model name and which uk retailers sell them? Cheers. Edited April 6, 2017 by Greg.Bassman
chrisanthony1211
It's the new body shape vs old body shape, the old shape being the more traditional Fender, not sure the date they started doing the new shape but think it was mid 2016 Edited April 6, 2017 by chrisanthony1211

I see. Is the 'old body shape' still available, would it have to be via special request?

chrisanthony1211
There may still be the old shape knocking about unsold, but I believe they have stopped making them now. I bought a California TT just before they changed shape but just never got on with it so sold it, don't know why, but some basses you just don't gel with.. fretmeister
Old ones no longer available even as a special order.
Cuzzie
I have to say I love the Sandberg's I have a MarloweDK and my good buddy a TT. Mine has the Sandberg pups, his the Delano's and both are immense. There is a TM bass on here I think/gumtree which is a reasonable price old body, 5 string
fretmeister
I've had 3 of them. The 4 strings went because I pretty much only play 5 strings now, and the 5 went because it was just a little heavy for me. One of the 4 strings was a white passive TT4 (jazz) with an ebony board and block inlays. It was lovely. If I had the money I'd have that back. fretmeister
Partly they wanted to get a newer lightweight design with less compromises, like poor upper fret access... And there were rumours of a bit of pressure from Fender. But there are hundreds of jazz clones so I'm not too sure about that. But the change has been really popular- they used to take custom orders but now they don't have capacity. They've installed a second production line just for retail demand! Try the new shape. It balances better, it's lighter, and just more comfy.
