BassApprentice
Odd title I know. Stumbled across this on a Facebook ad. (congrats. targeted ads) Seems like it's a Gumtree style rental service. Does loads of stuff but particularly interested around the Music gear hiring. Rather than standard fare from gear rental services you might be able to get something more interesting out of this. It is a massive risk I guess giving away your gear to a stranger but they say everything is fully insured. https://fatlama.com/about I like the concept as some of us may have too much gear that isn't being used but don't want to sell so could make some money rather than hanging on a wall/in a case. What do you guys think? Good idea? Load of bollocks? Edited April 7, 2017 by BassApprentice

pbasspecial
Lots of scams on gumtree. My wife nearly fell for one yesterday.
gs_triumph
I posted about this earlier this week having received a text from a mystery person asking if they could rent my pedal via fat lama. I have ignored it.
RhysP
Don't think I'd want to risk it.
Grangur
@gs_triumph thanks for posting. I've had a text about renting a bass I've got up for sale. They'd like to rent for 3-4 days next week. I asked where he's located, I would have to get the bass to him. .. no response.

stingrayPete1977
My Reply would be "Pay the full asking price and collect it and you can use it as often you like."
Grangur
Yes, @stingrayPete1977 I did get to thinking, "if you can't find the £175 to buy it outright, are you the right kind of person to borrow this, and keep it in good nick?"
Dan Dare
Unless the "hirer" leaves the full asking price as a deposit, what guarantee do you have that you'll ever see it again?
uk_lefty
I had a text like that when I was selling a pedal recently. I don't trust people enough with things like that.

Dan Dare
Just now, Grangur said: Fat Lama has an insurance policy and they, supposedly, check out hirers. Don't ask me how. I just had a look. It appears very ropey. Says you have to claim on your own insurance first and then use theirs if you don't have any joy. Sounds like a scam to me. gs_triumph
Standard insurance practice really. You claim off your own insurance first in a car accident. It's your insurance company who claims from 'their' insurance company.
fleabag
They may well have insurance, but have you ever tried getting your money back from an insurance company when things go mammary gland up ?

A total stranger will (your car insurance won't cover that). If you want to chance it, let us know how you get on.
gs_triumph
I didn't say it was a good deal. 1
