its not perfect, but it is cheap and safer than the usual X-type keyboard stands.

Yes. might be an option, and thinking about it I probably have something like that in the loft. When I bought an electric piano it came with a stand like that but I bought one of those angled back stands for in the house (and because I needed two rows), so that must still be around

Well, my bassstation came, and I have been pleasantly surprised for a change. It seems like mint actually meant mint, it still had the plastic over the display and everything in the box. Straight out of the box the sounds it makes are really usable.
Well worth it and I can see being able to use that for a lot of the songs I want to do.

I'll be honest, I've not tried the SY300 and judging by the demos, it does look good. That said, the approach I'm now taking is - If you want to sound like a Synth, use a Synth. Rather than trying to make my bass 'sound' a bit like a Synth.

As I've also said previously, I'm really enjoying the challenge of getting to know and use a different instrument.

Has anyone gigged using a MIDI keyboard running through Logic/Mainstage? Some of the synth bass sounds in Logic are super fat!

Space being at a premium for many bass players, my former firm KeyShyyyk invented woolen guernseys with a keyboard pattern knitted in on the front and MIDI wiring or similar coming out at the back.

Great gear for live situations, but many punters sadly thought it was just show, and that we had a backing tape.

We had two models:
- with resistance threads woven in: the WoolKiey,
- with physical pressure points behind the wool: the KeyBacka.

On the subject of the SY300 - I loosely considered it, watched a few demos, sounded good. Until I saw the price tag and realised I could buy at least 2 small keyboard synths with the money it costs.

I have the behringer clone, it sounds fine. Not the same as a keyboard though. I also have the GR55 synth, but again, its a different sort of thing.

I assume you are thinking of the Boss SYB-5 that you have the Behringer clone of, the post above is asking about the Boss SY300:

Ah yes, my mistake, I skim read and thats what I thought. I saw the SY300 when it came out and thought it was interesting, but there wasn't much information on its performance with bass. ANd also having the GR55 already, I had explored that avenue a bit, although obviously the convenience of not having to put the GK pickup on would be good.

The tracking appears to be very good, better maybe than the GR-55 even. This chap seems to have it working very crisply, not sure I'm that keen on the actual sounds though:

Tracking does seem good (not that the GR-55 is bad if you have the pickup well set up). The sounds aren't good at all, but they can be modified to do something better as long as the basic tracking is there in the first place.

Why am I getting Sub Phatty GAS when I know the BS2 does everything I want and more? Damn you Bob Moog.

Careful with that. I had a hankering for one of those but you know what happens? Every review of it you read will say 'oh this is one of the best synth sounds until the Sub37 came along' and 'this has a good keyboard, obviously not as good as the Sub37' and 'the sounds are in a class all of their own, only eclipsed by the Sub37' - and you know where that madness leads...

You speak much sense. There is absolutely no way I can justify the ~£1000 used for a Sub37. The Sub Phatty is running at circa £600 used as it is, and that's more than I've ever spent on a bass. Madness. BS2 It is then

I can't forget the compelling possibility of powering a BS2 from my pedalboard which I can't do with any of the Moogs. Can't even do it with the Ultranova to be fair. Well, I could, but it runs on 12v and I frankly can't be arsed dealing with the hassle of that.
