Got around 1k to spend on a bass - anyone got any recommendations ? - tried the Fender Mexican Standard but any thought s of a goodish bass for around this price?

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to pick up a US Standard for that price, I am sure PMT had some in their current sale. I had an email showing all the stuff but I've deleted it. Pretty sure there was a US Standard Jazz for £999 in there.

If you`ve tried the Mex Standard Fender and like the sounds/playability then I`d go for a US Standard Fender, 2012 onwards so you get the Custom Shop pickups which are very nice. Def the best US range that I`ve tried, the post 2012s.

I wouldn't make anybody a recommendation for a £1k bass without first knowing what kind of sound they want, favourite bands/bassists, etc.

Growly, modern and aggressive or fat and old skool? Active/passive, how many strings? Classic looks or something a bit different?

I play in a 90's britpop band so indie/rock sound all the way 4 string. Currently have a 4 string 90's Fender Mexican Jazz and a Musicman Stingray going through an Ashdown ABM 500 amp and Barefaced cab. Looking for a gigging bass.

I've just sold my Mexican standard Precision, but have no intention of parting with my pair of US Standards. There is a significant difference in quality and sound, in my opinion. I still have a Mexican Jazz, the 60s classic, simply because it means too much to me to sell, but my US Standard Jazz is a better bass. Having said that, for the last couple of months all I have played is my Epiphone Jack Casady!

Yep a Fender i'm looking at. Weighing up the usual pro's and con's to Mex vs US. Was looking at the Mex Deluxe but then played the Elite but another 1k extra.

Do you have to buy new ?

Main difference between Mex standard and US standard Precision or Jazz are better bridge, tuners and pick ups, better quality wood (in fewer pieces, I have heard claimed). The US does cost about double what the Mexican does, though, and the Mex standard is a perfectly good bass. The US is just better, but it's hard to say it's twice as good. They seem tougher, more durable, stand up to knocks better, screws stay tight in the US basses better than in the Mexican ones. Then again, it's a quick job to test and tighten a few screws every now and then.

Worth looking overseas then - the 2012/16 Series is now discontinued so there are a few barains lurking around. Even with import fees and postage you should pick one up within budget, and of course, as Dave said there are still some over here at good prices.

Should be able to cover up that West Ham logo with the remaining £13 too!

Better off spending the £13 on weights training :P

One of the good things about Basschat is that there will be players near your location that will let you try their basses so you can get a ball park idea of what you are looking for.

Scrape it off with a screwdriver.

Then it will looked relic'd too!

Insisting on new is a big expense. It means you're restricting your choices to cheaper basses.

You can buy better basses in new condition in the BC Classifieds.

There are also some great used basses on the Bass Direct web site

As a long time Lakland player I think everyone should try one of these before they decide on a new bass.

American Standard P - would suit what you're doing perfectly & the quality on them is great. They're discontinued but only very recently so many shops still have stock & it's discounted to 1k, you may be a little limited on colour choice but you can't really go wrong with the basses.

Assuming that '57 re-issue in the classifieds on here is an American Vintage Re-Issue that would be a good buy too.

There are also a few American Special P basses and Jazzes kicking about in shops. I love mine. The neck is fantastic and fit/finish are quality.

Nate Mendel P Basd also worth a shout if you don't mind a subtle relic. Necks are great and grisly growly sound.

Then there's Lakeland and G&L, etc...

If it were my dosh I'd get a Yamaha BB1024 or 1025 depending how many strings you want. I'm a bit in love with Yamaha BBs at the moment.
