Sheer perfection

There are a few songs that I consider to be absolute perfection. This one is top of the list. I'm not a huge Fleetwood Mac fan but I think that this is an absolute masterclass in songwriting and performance. I've ripped the bass line in the chorus off so many times! 2nd in my list is Be My Baby by The Ronettes.

Do you have a perfect song?

Perfection is anything Keb Mo has recorded. Great songs using the world's best bass players playing the best lines for the last 20 years.

Hard to beat this though. . . .

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by The Band

Perfect songs? Olivers Army by Elvis Costello. Great melody, clever but meaningful lyrics, and a wonderful tension builder to come out of the middle 8. Bliss.

In My Life, by the Beatles. Just a beautiful, beautiful song, perfectly put together, wistful and poignant. And those harmonies to die for.

There's so many. One that springs to mind is Somewhere Beyond the Sea. The bridge takes it up a notch and then resolves back to the verse. Brillant!

I know what you mean about GYOW. I heard it on the radio recently and was digging the bass part.

In my opinion, the greatest pop song ever written. Solid gold pop perfection, I reckon.

Yes, agreed. The greatest pop record of all time. As Nile Rodgers has put it, the song is full of hooks and everything is in its right place.

In My Life is Mrs Trueno's favourite song. For me it's I Saw Her Standing There.

I also like Glen Campbell's Wichita Lineman.

... and Burlesque by Family...

Actually, there's loads, and they all achieve perfection in their own way for different reasons. If you're pedantic, that may offend your definition of perfection.

I have to say that I don't believe in the concept of perfection. That's my excuse for putting Tenacious D up (above).

I do however have many songs that I like a LOT. Trouble is I sometimes play them to the point of boredom. Then it's time to move on. Mood is such a factor in my enjoyment that asking me what I think of as perfect is like asking someone to nail a jelly to a jack-in-the-box.

Some beautiful vocal harmonies on that album. Love's in Need of Love Today is seriously spiritual.
