I am not too keen on the black body of my Peavey Zodiac BXP
I would like to strip it and go for a more natural wood grain finish.
My only worry is that I may go through all the work only to find a sh*te wood underneath with big bits of filler etc.

Anyone know what I can expect to find underneath the current finish?

Don't have one so can't say for definite, but I'd be surprised if these had filler etc. Might not necessarily be the prettiest grain or 1 piece of wood but these basses are mass produced so should be in a decent state underneath.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable comes along and can be more help

Yup, it'll be pot luck. As BassApprentice says there shouldn't be filler but you might find a very dull multi-piece lump of alder (the specs say "solid alder body") underneath.
If it was horrid, you could possibly stain darker before finishing, that should hide poor grain better. It will always be a chance you are taking though.
Its a pity its not a Fender sized neck as you could have bought a lovely new body for not too much.

Also, if you are going to strip the body by hand, do not underestimate the sheer amount of blood and guts it will take to get the current finish off - I have done it once, and will not be repeating the experience.

I dont think I bother due to the alder body. I may just do a custom paint job and have my mate help me with a bit of airbrushing
Not sure yet.
