Loved Whistle Test. A great show, although sometimes it wasn't to my taste. However, the presenters didn't feel the need to play along with the artists or for there to be a pseudo party vibe.

Exactly. Later... started with little or no audience, and that worked for me. Like the OGWT, it created an immediacy and intimacy with the viewer. Hardly ever watch it now, unless there's a plug here.

It's as if it was the illegitimate love child of TOTP and TOGWT. Now that its parents have retired it is left running the shop into the ground - if you take some of the comment seriously.

It's good to have a commercial free music program at all IMHB. If you channel surf the Freesat music offerings you are as likely to hit a commercial as a music vid. Nowadays there is a lot of "lifestyle" content too which makes me want to yak up into a bucket frankly.

Be honest, you'd miss it if it went away forever.
My thoughts exactly. It's like it's a music program devised by a focus group (like a lot of BBC programming). Speaking of TOTP, given that the Beeb don't seem to tire of rehashing that cheese-fest, why don't they repeat some Whistle Test too?
quiet a lot of TOGWT content appears in oldies music programmes, watched one on the yesterday channel of all places the other day which was almost exclusively Whistle Test content, there's a bit of rose coloured specs going on here, there was an awful lot of crap on the Whistle Test as well as the good stuff, bit like Jools :)
I agree on the rose tinted specs with regard to some of the content, you can't please everybody, as tastes in music differ (fortunately) but I still think the format was superior to Later.

While I feel it could have done with fewer mimed performances, I think I do prefer the old OGWT format without the studio audience or the unconvincing party atmosphere of Later. Although Bob Harris's attitude towards anything he considered to be unworthy was rather off-putting and did the show no favours IMO. In retrospect it seems comically short-sighted to have been so dismissive of acts like Roxy Music as Harris was...

Keep an eye on BBC4 because they sometimes put on docs using TOGWT footage and such late on in the night.

I really like the TV format of having bands doing a short set instead of one song in a circle, like Later...

Obviously OGWT and The Tube had this format, but also Channel 4's short lived The White Room from the mid 90s (anyone remember that?) which was a great show. It allows a band to get into the groove a lot more than doing one song and stopping again, which results in a much better performance I think.

Didn't realise a new series had started, no great loss as I have totally lost interest in it.
From the look of last nights line up and comments on here, it was not for me anyway.
I now watch the Friday Night Rock Show on Freeview channel 82, great little show with a couple of live bands every week.
Glenn Hughes was on last night.

Haven't watched it for a while and feel the primary reason behind this being that the bill is just too diverse and lumpy for it to be an enjoyable hour long watch.

The problem is that I don't think Joolz cares what the expert muso audience thinks, because he is aiming the show at what he feels is 'educating' the TOTPs crowd

He doesn't have anything to do with selecting the bands - he's just the presenter.

Doesn't even know who's on until quite late some weeks.

I find his annoying smugness just too much for me, I watch less and less TV these days and cannot bring myself to watch a large number of popular presenters these days, the likes of Jonathan Ross or Clarkson have me instantly reaching for the off button. Sadly Mr Holland falls into that category and I say sadly as there is far too little music on TV as it is.

And an awful lot to look at and think "that's absolute bollocks mate"

Indeed...

I quite enjoyed it - as I usually do, oddly.

I say "oddly" because I'm by nature a metal/prog head so Jools never caters to "my" taste. However the show frequently exposes me to music I would usually never listen to, and sometimes this is quite refreshing. This week's show did feature some great musicianship and songcraft, and while I won't be supporting the careers of any of the featured artists, there was a lot to appreciate.

The only thing that really left me nonplussed was the country & western lady - in fact my vocalist partner erupted in gales of laughter as soon as she opened her mouth and all those mawkish, generic cliches poured out. The fact she was there shows that there's always an audience and a market for the same old same old, I suppose.

I enjoyed the performance by Courtney Marie Andrews, being the sort of music I often listen to ( along with many other
genres ) which is one reason why I usually watch 'Later with Jools'. Another reason being it's fairly light on metal and prog,
which doesn't seemed clichéd at all to me..... :D
