neepheid
I know I have a thread going about this elsewhere, but the more I dig, the less I like! This ebayer (diorscore) is selling DCMontana basses, and the more I look at them the more I think they're fakes: Genuine 77 Bass: diorscore's 77 Bass: Differences I've noticed thus far: "77" logo different size/not underlined Chrome instead of black hardware Chrome instead of black screws in scratchplate/pickups Different screw locations on scratchplate Different pot locations A difficult to believe RRP of £1299 when the US actual site lists as MSRP $1095 Not only that, but a few feedback scuffles, including an accusation of stalking of family members! Has all the hallmarks of a scam to me, anyone else agree? barneythedog
Two feedback comments from buyers complaining they are fakes .................. hmmm. bargepole ???
warwickhunt
To a total newbie of this make of bass they scream fake. However, I know nothing about this brand! On the other hand it seems so obviously wrong I fail to see how anyone could be conned... Strange how they seem to have the body shape almost/perfectly spot-on but got the detail soooo wrong! Then again if I looked at the logo on a 70/80's Fender compared to a 60's or even the headstock shape etc. I'd run a mile from ANY Fender. I'm not convinced that the negative feedback is all bad, as neither buyer paid more than £200 and it is actually the seller who is complaining of 'stalkers', part of the feedback business appears to be retaliatory. Hmmm not sure. A bit of an odd one that needs to be looked at in the (sober) cold light of dawn. Edited July 16, 2007 by warwickhunt
Bassassin
There were a couple of threads about DC Montana (dodgy pornstar name, if ever I heard one) on Bassworld/Basstalk & I'm more inclined to think that they're just badged-up Chinese or Korean cheapos to start with. Do a web search - there's sod-all info apart from their none-too-convincing website ("washed in the Nantahala River"? Okay. ) & whatever's being punted on Ebay at the moment. Doesn't ring terribly true for a company that claims to have been making handbuilt & "respected throughout the world" guitars for over 20 years. The "77" bass is a half arsed Warwick Fortress knockoff - and identical looking ones go on Ebay for under £100: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-STRING-W-STYLE-ELE...3QQcmdZViewItem And most of the other instruments in the DC Montana "range" are as unoriginal - one of the guitars is a blatant Ibanez copy right down to the headstock shape. Something else interesting about the DC Montana site - you want to buy one of their guitars? You'll have a job. No contact details, no distributors, no dealers, nothing. And it gets more curious: the dcmontana.com URL was first registered in March last year, and is owned by DC Montana of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I wonder how come they registered it through UK based ISP Pipex, then? Jon.
ped
Hmm I have heard of DC Olson but never DC Montana.
misrule
It's also interesting that neither the yellow nor white pages in the States have listings for a DC Montana company in Pigeon Forge, TN -- nor the Montana "family members" mentioned on their website. And they're not members of the Pigeon Forge chamber of commerce. There's a guitar shop in town -- maybe I'll have a chat ... Gazm
So it looks like the guy flogging these DC Montana basses on eBay has (possibly) set up a website that makes these look like legitimate bargains, when in reality they are cheap junk. Either that, or he's been conned by his supplier into thinking DC Montana is a genuine (and expensive) make. Crafty robbing git! You'd think they'd have the intelligence to make the pictures match - they might not have been sussed so easily.
misrule
More points to ponder -- diorscore, based in Gainsborough, Lincs, seems to be the only dealer of DC Montana stuff on Ebay. There's nothing on the American site. That's strange, from a supposed American firm with a 20-year history. But -- he makes no claims about the brand on Ebay nor does he say the basses are made in the USA. He only implies that we already know about "the amazing DC tone". There's nothing to link diorscore with the DC Montana website -- unless somebody knows more than me. *hint, hint* Cheers Mark Edited July 18, 2007 by misrule
bigboy
hi-i am a "newbie" -just signed up today as over the weekend i bought two bass guitars on the e-bay auction site- and am going to have a real go to learn to play bass-was putting in low bids on a lot of guitars-ended up with an 80´s jap. built (matsumoko)westone gt. spectrum for 80 quid-and also a dc montana speedster-claimed 1998 build second hand bass guitar-my winning bid was 60 quid-it seemed very cheap-and nobody showed much interest in the bidding at he end-odd for a supposedly quality instrument??-very interesting to read your members throughts on the seller-diorscore- will see what i get when it arrives!!-still at 60 quid it will make a good wall ornament in my bar/musicroom at home!! also bought this weekend a peavey telecaster copy guitar-in what looks like very good order-generation exp model-55 quid! will keep you posted on how i get along with my possibly us made dc montana speedster bass!! regards-john Edited July 23, 2007 by bigboy
