I'm a lead guitarist who began as a bass player, and now, after many years, considering coming back to the deep end. Now I have to decide how to spend my very limited funds to arrive at an outfit suitable for blues, modern worship and contemporary Christian... decisons, decisons!

I'm sure you'll be very pleased to discover how far bass gear has advanced both in quality and price since you last played. Unlike the skinny stringed stuff of course, which seems to remain firmly rooted in the 1950s :)

Welcome to BC

First - Welcome! :)

Second - Get your nose in the for sale section, there's always some very good deals there. You could probably get sorted for very close to £200 for a reasonable bass + amp.

Thanks for the suggestions, people. I'm now the proud owner of an Indie 604 custom in natural swamp ash. Lovely bass, suits me down to the ground. I've only a practice amp for the moment, so the next step is a proper amp... I'm looking at things like the Ashdown EVO II and the G-K Backline. I hear bad things about Behringer, which is a shame, as their amps look good for the money, and the one I've heard close up, a BXL1800A, sounded good...? I really can't afford to venture into Ampeg or Trace Elliott territory, much as I might like to!

Now then, now then... it's not that bad

Quite right about being stuck, though, Andy - bass kit has evolved far further than guitars, except possibly for the digital modelling stuff - which is shunned by so many guitarists anyway, so I suppose that just makes your point... :)
