Tommy Cogbill did a lot of doubling between Bass and Guitar on his early sessions.

Nope, it was on a Rod Stewart Solo album and although Ronnie Wood(guitar and Bass) and Ian Mac played on it , Ronnie Laine didn't. Likewise neither did John Peel (contrary to his TOP appearance), it was Ray Jackson (Lindisfarne) on Mandolin.

Possibly not a popular bassist... but from what I've seen and heard Bryan Adams is a very handy live bass player while also singing.
