bassmayhem
For sale is my nice old Steinberger XL2/5. I let the pictures speak for themselves. The only odd thing is a somewhat strange preamp that probably was installed from scratch: a Haz Lab preamp made for the Steinberger bass. The odd thing - maybe a switch made by the previous owner - is that the two band eq only has a pot with center detent, and no tandem pot. It makes the eq boost lows in one direction and highs in the other. No cut. I have never used the eq, though, just the pickup balance control. Do I have to say the bass sounds fantastic? It does! Fat, deep, with a nice mature midrange, yet clear... exactly what you would expect. Delivered in the original gigbag in good condition after 30+ years of use. Also one new spare kit of strings. An old original Steinberger string kit is also included, but unfortunately some of the strings are corroded in the vacuum package. I noticed that when I was about to use them. Well, see them as museal artifacts. The bass is in Sweden, but can be shipped worldwide at buyer's expense. Only trades I am interested in is a fretted L2 or XL2. Unfortunately PhotoBucket seems to be down; I attach a heap of new pic's when PhB is up and running. Otherwise, if you are seriously interested, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I send pics in full resolution. lowregisterhead
Very nice! I had an XL-5W years ago that had wide string spacing (hence the 'W'). What's the spacing at the bridge on this one?
bassmayhem
Well... 54,8 mm total, making string-to-string 13,7 mm. 2,16" total, making string-to-string 0,54" in decimals... //Roger Edited May 14, 2017 by bassmayhem
MattM
The preamp is the latter A-designated preamp e.g. an XL2 with this fitted would be an XL2A. Original preamps were powered VVT identical to a Jazz, the A preamp had the centre-detented boost and cut control which is active. This bass is a rare as rocking horse droppings and, as such, is very well priced. Good luck with the sale.

bassmayhem
Well, now PhotoBucket has awaken, so here are the pictures: Lo and behold! I'm afraid with my gorilla mitts I would struggle to get my fingers between the strings, even at the bridge. There is a school of thought that that's not really necessary, of course. Still a very lovely and extremely rare thing. GLWTS.
bassmayhem
I thought the same, lowregisterhead... I was afraid at first that it wouldn't work. (I have mega gorilla hands...) It took a few hours to get used. I may not play the fastest licks with my fingers on this beauty, but I sure can groove... Also - if you are a pick player it is fantastic. bassmayhem
Fabulous basses these!
They truly are. The low B on this one is monstruous. The only downside with the construction is you cannot use a clip-on tuner... I won't grieve if it doesn't get sold... bassmayhem
Since the old ad surfaced I set the same price in this (new) ad: £1850 plus shipping. Or trade for a four string. Or - if someone has the four string hardware for sale, give me a notice...
