The All New RickenFaker Thread

@kodiakblair I'm joking about dobbing them in. It didn't come across that way in my post though. When I said it out loud, it sounded like a joke :(

I just checked again, and it's €875. I don't know how good or bad that price is. PM and I can send you the link if you want.

@barrycreed No need to be coy talking about Fakers, whatever the brand. You can say "Rockinbetter" here, look - I just said it. Rockinbetter. Said it again. Just don't say they're anything to do with Tokai, because they're not.

Talk about them, post pics of them, describe them - just don't try to sell them or post links to sales. Best place for unlimited discourse  is, of course, here:

@Bassassin I'm not on the bookface anymore, so can't join. :( The one I saw online is a Jayro, advertised as Japanese, but looking back through old threads here, it would seem to be Korean? Maybe the brand is Japanese, and it was made in Korea? It's set neck as well if that should make a difference or not...

I *might* see if I could knock them down on price a bit.

That's kind of fierce but then Bach charge €433 for their pine body Riverboat models.

Aye €433 for pine 😮

On their site they call the timber "Caroline wood" - no idea what that means, and Google's no help for obvious reasons! Is that a type of pine?

Everything else they do seems to be the usual hardwoods used in instrument building - maple, mahogany, alder, ash, basswood etc. Would seem really odd they'd use pine for just one instrument, particularly when it's built with a set maple neck & maple top - you'd think mixing hardwoods & softwoods like that might make it more unstable.

Apropos of nothing, or at least nothing relevant to Fakers, I'm not sure why pine isn't often used in guitar building - seems the first Fender Esquires & Broadcasters had pine bodies.

Carolina pine or shortleaf.

It's not really fair to describe it as "softwood" it's harder than alder and about 1/3rd heavier.

It's a great timber. I made a slab body from longleaf.  I'd say the reason folks don't use it is everybody thinks eastern white pine or the Scots pine we have here.

Weight is another thing, plenty pine varieties are heavy. This fella is over 12.6lbs.

Can't get them to go under €800 for the Jayro.

Also, I've seen in Spain, a Kay faker and an Oakland 4003 replica, for a bit cheaper... The Oakland looks more like a Ric compared to the Kay.

800 is too much - let that one go.

I do fancy a Kay - it's a pile of junk worth <£100 (though some will try and inflate the price), but I'd like one anyway.

I've put a picture of HW4005 here before but I've since picked up a '77 Aria, so here they are together.

The Aria came with original case which is in good nick really and totally useable.

I've made my own treble pickup bezel including thumbrest so I don't lose any finger tips on surround.

I used it about three times and then we went into lockdown and it's stuck inside a business premises that I can't access so I haven't seen it for ages now, I really want to play it.

I hope nobody pays that for it!

I won’t. The same place has some Greco SG basses for cheap too but the two Ric fakers they had seemed way over priced.

There is a polish guy who restores guitars (his vids are on YT) who is either restoring a faker or putting one together . Things got lost in translation !

A quick google search and they look like a Chickenbacker to me.

Can't find much but MonoGram appears to be a budget current/recent Japanese brand, and their Fakers do look like generic MIC stuff.

I think they're a set up in Japan who sell on Chickenbackers.

Hi folks..

Here is my ibanez 2388b/DX, its quite a rare/early one according to our resident expert @Bassassin who kindly helped me identify it..  it has dot markers with 2 dots on 7, 3 dots on 12 and 2 on 17 instead of the usual crushed pearl inlays.

Its completely original, just missing the pickup cover, everything works perfectly and it has a lovely feel to it and a wonderful tone with the flats it's currently dressed in..
