theplumber Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Messaged the seller,as I used to own a few of these guitars. This is either the made in India,Encore P bass or the Sunn Mustang. Either way,not a Fender and not worth over £400 that some poor bugger has bid! Quote
theplumber Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Used to own one of these,an old Encore,I believe, made in India. Not bad at 40 quid,oh..I think someone is in for a shock! Quote
T-Bay Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 It's a minefield for the unwary for sure. They may well be happy with it until they come to sell it on, or may think Fenders are cheaply made rubbish! (Cue others making their own jokes on that one). Quote
stu_g Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I saw that and thought it was an encore, they have changed the string tree and neck plate, still has the original machineheads though. Quote
2x18 Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 (edited) Direct link if anyone fancies bidding -- He says he doesn't know much about it, but he has sold a fair bit of bass gear according to his feedback! kendall Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Not doubting you at all. But how can you tell? Genuinely interested. What gave it away? Quote

Rikki_Sixx Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I wondered the same. Saw this as I was eating breakfast and was half-asleep so didn't pick up on anything glaringly obvious other than the headstock logo position looks off. It does look like a dodgy listing though, absolutely. Such a barebones titles and description, can't help but be suspicious! Quote

Just a dodgy logo nothing else. An absolute bargain. Quote
LewisK1975 Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Also the 'AMXN' and serial that's been stamped into the neck plate with manual hammer punches, that's a bit of a giveaway. Quote
LewisK1975 Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Are we going to do the right thing and report the listing? If nothing else to save the poor sap who's bid? Quote
Phil Adams Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 He (cleverly) hasn't actually claimed it to be anything other than a Precision bass. Quote
Phil Adams Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Perhaps the seller has bid on his own (Encore) bass to encourage other bids? Quote
Bass_Guardian Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 What if I said I was the bidder..... (I'm not don't panic!) Quote
BassBunny Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 (edited)
He (cleverly) hasn't actually claimed it to be anything other than a Precision bass. Phil Adams Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 He hasn't said it is a Fender Bass, made in California in 1997 or 1998. Suitably vague misleading wording. Lets send Bass Guardian round to give him a slap! Quote

Adrenochrome Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 As "Precision Bass" is trademarked by Fender, and hasn't been used by Encore AFAIK, then the seller clearly is suggesting that the bass is something that it's not. Quote
theplumber Posted May 19, 2017 Author Posted May 19, 2017 I messaged the seller,to point out that I thought it was an Encore, having owned a few over the years. He said he had had the guitar over 10 years, paid about 300 for it and ''had never been sure'' thats why he had not listed it as a Fender. Went on to say it had been in a couple of shops over the years for set ups and they have never questioned it. Certainly plays and sounds like a Fender. ...Well,as I said,I owned a few of these made in India guitars. To be honest, they are good enough and sound fine. Well built,a bit heavy. I thought after giving him the info,he would have seen that the guitar is worth £40 to about £100 not over £400 that the current bid was.I was hoping he might have altered the listing at least, but no.....Reported it to ebay. Seeing as how he started the bid at £450 and wasn't sure about it being a Fender just seems bull sh*t! Quote
gjones Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I think you're right. Bassassin Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 The Indian-made Encores were the same basses as the Indian Sunn Mustangs. And as any fule kno, Sunn is/was owned by Fender. So it might be a bit Fender-y. Quote
