Mykesbass
Worth a punt? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122532184076?_trksid=p2045573.m570.l5999&_trkparms=gh1g%3DI122532184076.N36.S1.R1.TR2
If that is local to you, and you like mellow warmth then snap it up straight away! nige1968
My mate has a Freshman which sounds very nice and didn't cost a fortune. They're even based in Scotland (though built overseas, obvs). http://www.freshmanguitars.net/about/
ricksterphil
Larrivee if you can find one for £500 sh - you can occasionally Yamaha LL16 Ovation - USA one Walden - very good for no money Farida - the higher end ones can be had for £2-300 sh and if they are anything like their basses they'll be good head to www.thefretboard.co.uk for more gen
roman_sub
I would highly encourage you to try in person, as many guitars as you can. In my experience, there is significantly more variability than with solid-body electrics - even nominally the same model can sound quite different. You'll know when you're holding the *one* in your hands!
leschirons
Taylor 110 secondhand. Bottom of the range but still play and sound beautiful.
PawelG
What about Gretsch? I played few from that range and they are outstanding quality and sound fantastic. Nicko
Another vote here for the Simon and Patrick brand. I've had mine about 10 years and its getting better with age.
EliasMooseblaster
No one has mentioned Faith yet! The Neptune is a beautiful guitar!
+1 for Faith - our guitarist got one a few years ago and it's a real gem of a guitar. Can't remember what model he has but it is a beauty. Or if you wanted to go really cheap, I've been playing an Epiphone AJ-100 for about 12-13 years. Remarkably good guitar compared with most other models in its price bracket, and you could always put some of the leftover cash towards a good setup! MoonBassAlpha
My guitarist uses a Simon & Patrick cedar which doesn't sound bad, though it needed a good setup. The finish is very thin which gives it a nice resonance, but he's very heavy-handed and has gone right through the finish round the sound hole. Personally, I find the sound a little boxy. I also own the Ami parlour from the same stable and that's ok, but cheaper. I think for similar money, the Faith acoustics are worth a look. gjones
If the tanglewood is difficult to play take it a tech and get it set up. You may not need to fork out for a new one if you can get the old one playing well. And then you can spend the money you saved on a new bass Edit: too late!
