Seen a great thread recently on the best bass lines with the fewest notes. But what about the best bass line ever, period? (With as many or as few notes as you want!)

This gets my vote: https://youtu.be/3dm_5qWWDV8

...and is definitely on my list of "must have a crack at soon!"

Do you agree, or is there anything out there that you think is better? If so, please share your all time favourite (and a YouTube link) with us.

I suspect that this is gonna make for some fun, interesting and educational thoughts from my fellow BCs over the bank hol weekend. Looking forward to hearing from you.

One of my favourites for many years is Warhead by the UK Subs:

I have always loved it's prominence in the track and it's quite easy to play!

I don't actually believe there is a "best" bassline but whenever I'm asked this question, John Paul Jones always comes first to mind.

songs where the bass line is the song and not just filling in gaps around the chords, Peaches and Sunshine of your Love spring to mind and Warhead as previously mentioned

Just a few quick suggestions, as these are some of my all time favourite bass lines...

What's Going On, Marvin Gaye, played by the legendary James Jamerson
Penny Lane, The Beatles, played by the equally legendary Macca
Good Times, Chic, played by Bernard Edwards
I Wish/Sir Duke, Stevie Wonder, played by ??? (- was it Stevie Wonder)

As has already been said, there are just so many wonderful bass lines out there to choose from we are literally spoiled for choice!

Oooh love all of those you've suggested (and many of the one's previously suggested above too)! - I'd probably go for Superstition by Stevie Wonder, which has made its way into one of our sets, as an alternative Stevie Wonder number.

If I'm allowed a second bite at the cherry, then here's something iconic from a band called the Who...

'Fat Angel', Jefferson Airplane with Jack Casady on bass, or...

'What to do with only two notes' (OK, and a couple of grace notes, if you insist...). A lesson in parsimony...

Mike Howlett's bass line on 'Isle of Everywhere' from Gong's You album has long been a favourite of mine. I just happen to be listening to it right now, in fact!

For me, Stevie's 'For Once In My Life' has got to be well up there. Jamerson at his absolute best, total mastery. This graphic representation gives an idea of its combination of fearsome complexity and effortless groove.

To many to mention for me. I could list many Anthony Jackson groove lines.
But I am going to throw Greg Phillinganes into the mix with his Keyboard Bass Synth lines (literally loads of them).
This one is a particular favourite of mine.
