Osiris
Think this has already been mention by someone else but it gets another shout from me. Nothing flash, just a simple, repetitive melody that compliments the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuezNswtRfo

Just one of soooooo many gems from the brilliant pair: Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, in whatever formation they're playing in. Hot stuff, and more where that came from..! Mister RLP
I'm rather liking the following at the moment: Tom Waits - Soldier's Things - https://www.youtube....h?v=rNwC8ETa0pg Didn't realise it was featured in Peaky Blinders. Upright bass serves the song. Scott Walker - The Old Man's Back Again (Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime - https://www.youtube....h?v=N-zgdGQB4S4 Wow! Isthis Herbie Flowers? Sounds like tracks on Melody Nelson https://www.youtube....h?v=a3C4AVbqyY8 Kate Bush - Mother Stands for Comfort - https://www.youtube....h?v=xRnT9_eSVYM Eberhard Weber. Rather sublime. John Martyn - Some People are Crazy - https://www.youtube....h?v=wan46Vcbqow John Giblin. More fretless. Really loved the Scott Walker track (I'd not come across before, so THANK YOU for the introduction to this guy). Completely apt comment with the YouTube clip: [i]"The bassline is incredible. Al Krow
Cuzzie has just jogged my memory of two other great bass lines: John Taylor, Duran Duran, "Rio": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3W6yf6c-FA (definitely a guilty pleasure!) Bernard Edwards, Chic and the iconic "Good Times": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1APFyc_QtQ - a clip of him playing at his last live concert in 1996

Marc S
So many basslines - how can you choose a favourite? Which is best? - that will depend on my mood, what I wish to hear at any given time... and that constantly changes Also which ones do I like to play along to? That's maybe another question though Can't pick single "best" or "favourite" but in the running for me, already mentioned "Down In the Sewer" By the Stranglers. JJ Burnell's sound on that whole first album made me want to play bass "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" by the Blockheads - Norman Watt-Roy's bass is amazing on this song How about Chic's "Good Times"? - Bernard's brilliantly simple, groovy bass line to this song has been copied and re-copied so many times Several of Andy Rourke's bass lines from Smiths songs; "Heaven knows I'm miserable now" is just brilliant - love playing that (it actually makes me really happy lol) "This Charming Man" is just a great song, where the bass and guitar work superbly together - it's another one I like to play, as well as listen to "Barbarism Begins At Home" might be essentially the same all the way though, but it's a challenge to keep it going.... great bass line And on Double Bass, Danny Thompson makes Pentangle's "The trees they do grow high" sound simple - but it just oozes wonderfully chosen notes and a tone to die for Or perhaps pretty much anything he played on Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left" album... But choose one? Just one? my head hurts now! Oh, I've just thought about yet more - that lovely Rick Tone Paul Gray gets on the whole of the Damned's "Black Album" "Therapy" "Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde" "Twisted Nerve" Oh, what about Paul McCartney on "Come Together"? and what about..... I'd better stop there and have a lie down

BassTractor
Best bass line ever? Hard to choose, as I think there's a place for all three types (braid, fluorocarbon and monofilament). Aw, c'mon! Somebody had to!

It's actually going into our Retros live set tonight for the first time tonight - I find I have to add a ghost note in just before repeating the phrase as the only way I can keep the time completely precise, which is what Jamerson does so wonderfully (and with just one finger in his case!!) Although the use of keys on the newer version does add something, overall there's no comparison in my mind. I guess it could be just the recording but the original is so much better! Jamerson's tone and articulation on the bass line sings whereas the newer one is "muddy" in comparison, and Jackie Wilson's vocals would definitely be my choice too.
