Byo
Hi there, I have a CIJ Fender Mustang bass (Candy Apple Red with the competition stripe on the side) and wonder which would be some direct replacement machine heads for it. The back plates are slightly smaller than a normal Fender machine heads. Cheers!
Grangur
Are they the same as Squier machine heads? In which case, I have some going spare. I guess this depends on what you're wanting to achieve. Do you have a problem with the ones you have, or are you wanting a different look, or is it to reduce weight?

[/quote] There is a slight buzz when tuned to pitch on one of the pegs and I am not a fan of the feel and, for some reason, lack of tension on the pegs. With a slight touch you can detune the strings.

They were acquired for a project. I actually have 5. One has a slightly bent head. But the other 4 are in pretty much perfect condition. prowla
I think the generic Chinese ones are modelled on Schallers (& Fender MIM?).

Jean-Luc Pickguard
My understanding is that the stock tuners on my 2004 CIJ mustang were made by Gotoh so swapping them out for generic chinese units would probably not be an upgrade. I have no problem with my tuners except that I prefer the look of lollipop-style ones as fitted to original '60s Mustangs. The posts are smaller than most similar looking tuners so they probably won't fit without enlarging the hole with a reamer. If tuners are loose they could just need tightening and odd vibrations can possibly be caused by how the strings are wound onto the posts. Can you post pics of the front & back of the headstock? fretmeister
If it was mine - I wouldn't care about matching it. I'd just put Hipshot Ultralites on it and improve the balance and lower the weight.
Byo
Thanks for all the advice. Once I get back from holiday I will give the Mustang some TLC to see if it solves the issue. Cheers!
