ROConnell Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 .Attention - Charlie Puth The song is somewhere in the charts, I don't really like it. But that bass! Nice and funky, ridiculously catchy. acidbass Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Pop has always had great bass, just look at ABBA! It's often how session jazz guys make a living. Quote

TheGreek Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Aaaah...you mean nice "bassline" - I'm watching it thinking "isn't that just a Yamaha RBX".... Quote
Skol303 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Lots of great basslines in pop chart crap. Here's a very unlikely favourite of mine... but perhaps now old enough to be considered 'vintage': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOZuxwVk7TU Quote

Maybe this should be a pop chart crap bassline appreciation thread? Here's another 'vintage' I just thought of... interpol52 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 My kind of thread! http://youtu.be/EIhSnaqou0I Simple and fun to play, especially the chorus. Nice low Dflat for the 5 stringers too in the breakdown. Quote
bazzbass Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 watched that Britney clip....what was the question? hubba hubba Quote

Barking Spiders Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 The history of pop is one of crap songs with good to great basslines. Here's a godawful slice of rank cheese but listen to that bass!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=catKKJvf9zM Quote
To me it sounds like the original is an octave down from the cover, it makes it sound like there's an octave pedal on. Man that Crush song hit me right in the nostalgia from when I used to get a "now that's what I call music" every Christmas as a kid! Quote

Dan Dare Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 A great rhythm section can make anything work. A lot of schlock has great bass/drum parts. Quote

BrunoBass Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Making pop records is and always has been highly skilful. It's no surprise how good some of the musicianship is. It's designed to sound good on the radio, blatantly appeal to it's target audience (few of whom I'd imagine are Basschat correspondents), and subliminally appeal to the parents of said audience. It's certainly not crap 😊 Quote
chris_b Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 +1 Most "pop" music over the years has had very high production values. I can think of many who are top quality like Motown, Queen, ABBA, Beach Boys etc. The only guy who didn't seem to bother was Bob Dylan but he had other levels of greatness going for him. I can't think of any others who didn't produce a quality product. A lot of care was taken over disposable 2 min pop songs. It might be "pop" but it was rarely "crap". Quote

I have currently one song by some band I just discovered that reminds me a LOT to something else... several weeks have passed and I just can't place it, and now I hate the song because it keeps me going for hours searching in the vaults of my brain Quote
Misdee Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Back in the 70's and 80's loads of pop chart records had great bass lines. The Top 40 was chock-a-block with them. Quote
