umcoo
Hi all, I'm currently restoring on old Schecter Jazz. The 2 pickups have scratched pole pieces. I'm wondering how I can get these smooth again. I'm thinking about light sanding, maybe 600 grit or above to get the scratches out. Does anyone have any tips/ideas how I can do this? FYI - the pickups have ceramic bar magnets so the actual pole pieces are just steel parts and not magnetised. Many thanks
MoonBassAlpha
Is the steel chrome plated? 1000 wet n dry will take out fine scratches ok and leave a reasonable shine, especially if done with a little oil. You'd want to take the pickup covers off so they don't get scuffed, obv.
umcoo
I'm not sure if they're chrome plated, is there an easy way to find out? They came to me covered in rust. The rust is now gone, but in the process, the pole pieces took a beating. I'll try 1000 grit and see what they look like. When you say oil, can you explain what you mean? Thanks! MoonBassAlpha
A little oil will lubricate the paper, and you can get a slightly smoother finish. It may also slow down the rusting process for the future.
