gapiro Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 (edited) Bit of a DB newbie - I use it largely for (amdram) theatre shows and rockabilly stuff and have never had lessons. Literally had it set up as per when I bought it off a fellow BC'er. Just took my double bass out after about 2 months of not playing - largely due to having so many other gigs on BG that I just haven't got round to playing at all. Opened case. sh*te, the bridge has fallen over and the soundpost is no longer set. So what do I do now - is it a case of emergency trip to somewhere (any recommendations to places near cambridge would be appreciated) or can I re-set the bridge and soundpost myself? Burns-bass Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 Get a professional to look at it. If the sound Post isn't in the right place and you tension up the strings it could cause some serious problems. It should be a quick thing to do, but do it properly not the cheap way out. Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I agree unless you know how to set the post you could ruin the bass, it might need a new post that's a touch longer or the existing one putting in a different place to where it was if it's fallen out? It shouldn't cost that much even with a new post fitted bespoke to your bass, good luck! Quote
SubsonicSimpleton Posted June 17, 2017 Posted June 17, 2017 Go see a luthier - setting the post and standing the bridge back up isn't a big deal, why the bridge has fallen over in the first place is an interesting question - when the strings are tuned to pitch, assuming the bridge feet are correctly fitted to the top and the slots are sized correctly for the strings and lubricated with graphite from a pencil, it really shouldn't be going anywhere, so it is possible that you might benefit from some minor setup work. petebassist Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Thanks for sharing that crackin video. I'd be happy to put a bridge back on, but I wouldn't attempt a sound-post. I believe you need a special sound-post tool to position it through the sound hole, and X-ray eyes... Quote
