I'm looking for a new strap.

I'm vegan, so would prefer not to have anything made of leather, and I don't like neotech straps, they're too stretchy and bouncy.

It needs to be quite wide and padded, I play a rather heavy 7 string bass, it's something like 6.5kg.

A lot of straps have the main part made of something animal friendly, but still have leather ends where the strap locks go.

Any other vegan bassists?

Plenty of fabric/webbing straps available. Try Google. Or have one made? If you can afford a custom 7 string, I should imagine money isn't an issue.

Problem with webbing is they squash up. I got the bass used and had to sell pretty much everything to buy it.

Thanks though.

sometimes you just have to admit that nothing beats leather for such things :)

Just remember the animal was already gonna die for it's meat, the leather is a by product. And if it wasn't killed for it's meat it never would have been born. I know this won't sit with a vegan but it's the truth.

Is anyone making hemp straps?

I bought a Mono strap for one of my basses as it is leather free, quite wide and comfortable, completely animal free. Not expensive, either.

Check this one: Geezer Butler's vegan strap:

I bought my superb (leather) strap from this company in New York - great girl called Rachel - I think she sent it marked 'gift' too to avoid any extra sting...

+1 for Mono.. I have (cough) a couple!
Comfy as.
I'm veggie but have vegan mates so asked a direct question of Mono in America, as it only intimated safe somewhere on the website. Got a really nice reply confirming the whole Mono range is vegan friendly.

I am not vegan so can't speak for all vegans by any stretch but I think the issue is the fact that animals are bred, kept in often poor conditions and then killed in often inhumane ways just to put a steak on the table so to speak. I don't think many vegans would see the short lives they have as an offset for this hence the veganism. It doesn't sit well with most meat eaters, but it's the truth (speaking from meat eating point of view it sits badly with me which is why I am careful where I source food and eat meat sparingly - I am just a crap vegetarian really).

Another vote for couchstraps- https://www.couchguitarstraps.com/guitar-straps/seat-belt-and-woven-guitar-straps/all-plain-black-vegan-strap-guitar.html

They are very good but not sure if they will send direct to the UK, I picked up a couple when I was over there visiting last year.

Hmm... Not sure if buying a strap, albeit a vegan vinyl strap, from a company specialising in leather goods is in the spirit and ethos of vegan..?
The Californian Couch straps look to be about as vegan as they come. Worth inquiring as to availability, for those interested in cruelty-free, no sweat-shop, vegan products, maybe..?
Not bothered, myself; just sayin'.

They have a pretty cool selection, and it seems that they'd do you a custom one if what you like is not already in their catalog... worth a shot!

To an extent I do agree with you. Though surely by now you'd have thought they'd have invented an alternative.

Couch straps are vegan and I have several, mostly made from old car seats from classic American cars.

Thanks!

They look superb, and I like the recycling aspect too.
