I have a Trace Elliot (now there's a surprise) GP7 AH200 pre-amp which I've been using as an amp. Only recently learnt that it could be used to power a power amp.

Any suggestions or recommendations what to use it with?

If you don't want to spend loads, I'd have a look on eBay for a used Peavey PA power amp. You can bridge it to power one cab or use it in two channel mode to power multiples. They're reliable, plentiful and not expensive to buy used.

Make sure the output voltage of your trace can drive the input stage of the power amp you choose.. power amps tend to need 1.5v and a lot of preamp outputs are less than 0.8v which means you don't get the full monty from the amp

I used to own a QSC PLX3402, a gigantic amp capable of putting out 2 x 1700 W RMS in 2 ohms. Bridged 3400 W RMS in 4 ohms. Class D amp weighing some 9 kg, c:a 20 lbs. It has a neat feature: a high pass filter you can set at 30 Hz (Perfect!!!), 50 Hz (Not recommended - it eats flesh!) or bypass, but that means you can push your woofers out of the frame by just pushing the strings towards the pickup. The 30 Hz roll-off makes nearly no audible difference from flat, but you won't see the woofers move.

These amps are out of production now, newer successors are out, so they can be found at reasonable price.

If you want a 1U power amp:
Try a Red Rock Modus 3.0 or 4.5. Really good class H power amps!

Would this be a good buy?

You can buy them new from Thomann (with the three year warranty) for £135 ish... It's a budget amp - specs suggest it's bridged output is 600W into 8 Ohms (2 x 500W into 4 ohms stereo) Might suit you very well within these parameters - they're quite well liked from what I have read...

I haven't tried a lot of power amps but I'm real happy with my Fender MB1200 (800w into 4 ohms, 1200w into 2 ohms) which only needs an input of 1v which my VT Bass Deluxe happily provides. Made in Mexico too like all the new EVH stuff

PLX's are class H output which is a multi voltage rail class AB, they do use switched mode PSUs which is what they have in common with class D. A great range of amps anyway and one of the lesser powered ones would be more than enough for most people. there some fantastic bargains out there for these amps second hand.
