I came across this lovely old thing (c. 1927) at Hobgoblin in the West End.

That bizarre crosspiece is designed to allow you to support your forearm whilst picking.

Not quite as shiny as the ashtray on a Precision, but you get the general drift.

That is just what I've been looking for...really. I have an acoustic harp g****r with sympathetic strings that get muted because my forearm ends up laying on them...that's a neat solution..I'll look into getting one made..or similar.

Wouldn't that be to stop your arm from dampening the resonant quality of the soundboard?

edit - or is that what you meant by muting, as I guess it could be?
