New bass day... Warning, pointy content!

So this turned up at my door this morning, despite being stuck in France due to security. Which is understandable as they probably mistook it for a missile.

But seriously, I've waited a long six months for this to get to my door and it's finally here and it's a beast and was also named "Bass Of The Month" for July on the Public Peace website https://www.public-peace.de/bass-of-the-month/2230-public-peace-proudly-presents-the-bass-of-the-month-july-2017:

Thoughts:

If people don't know, Mensinger is one of Adrian from Maruszczyk's other brands, which has been around a lot longer than Maruszcyk has, despite it being more popular, so I was dealing with him throughout the process, however if I'm going to be critical of one thing, he should change delivery company, as the only times I've ever had issues with couriers are with Fed Ex, which is what he uses. It was stuck in France and missed the cutoff point, however. A phone call made all the difference and the bass was here the next day, which was today.

So I've been playing this bass since I woke up this morning (it came at 8 this morning!) and I think Adrian's team have made another winner on their hands, I specced it out to be exactly like my first Speesy in terms of playability but with an extra string and it feels like another instrument, not like the same specced out one with an extra string.

I went with a Musicman styled humbucker over a P styled split coil, mainly because I fancied a change from P styled basses and because the P pickup the last one came with had a Rayish type grind to it, so I thought why not go all the way and put one in and it may have been the tone I was looking for when I heard the last one, which got me 75% of the way there, but not the whole hog. It's clear, articulate and tracks the low B really well, it would also sound great as a base for a fretless bass of somekind.

despite myself having concerns about a 32 scale B because of my only experience with a "tight" B string is from my Lakland Skyline but after a conversation with Adrian, I'm pleased to say his advice and his knowledge is excellent and put my fears to rest. It also sounds more compressed and more modern sounding, I can't wait to try it in a live mix with my band and on my bands EP which is going to be done potentially in October.

All in all, another wonderful bass, heavier than my last one but still completely manageable for me.

It's very narrow for a fiver though isn't it?
Can't really do any slapiladapilies on it.

But, I have my Lakland for that.

I still think it's wider than Ibanez's string spacing though, but someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd forgotten it's a five string.

What's the string spacing at the bridge?
I'm not sure, I do have a certificate with the specs on. I'll find it.

I only specified the nut width.

Edit: Just measured it. It's 18MM at the Bridge.

That's really great, actually. I've always avoided even thinking about fivers since I'm sure the necks would just be too wide for me. Something like this I might actually be able to play! With standard 18mm string spacing it must be very tapered, though.

Honestly, I can see why people would think that it would be narrow.

For me it's fine though, I wanted it to be exactly the same as the four, with an extra string and that's what came out, going back and forth between my four string and my five string Speesy, it feels almost identical to play, just with an extra string.

The thought process between the two is completely different though.

For the gigs I do that'd be wrong on every level! I want one now :)

I've heard a few people say that that want a bass in this colour scheme now.

I'm such a bad influence!

Seems v small to me, my ACGs are 45mm nut with 17mm spacing at the bridge and I thought they were quite compact! I can see the appeal though, very much :)

Just had another look, it is 17MM as opposed to 18MM.

I'd love to try something that's a little wider, at the nut.

the more I play it, the more I get used to it though.
