naxos10 Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 I will be looking to purchase a barefaced Two10 in the coming weeks and was wondering if any of you out there can advise on the long term durability of the 2 finish options, the standard Tolex or the optional Acrylic finish. Is one proving to be better than the other? Quote
bertbass Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 Personally, I'd go with the acrylic. Hard wearing and if it gets chipped, very easy to touch up invisibly. Tolex always comes unstuck eventually along the joins regardless of make of equipment or type of glue. IMHO of course. Quote
Bill Fitzmaurice Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 You can patch acrylic, you have to replace Tolex. Quote
Lozz196 Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 Will it get to 10 posts before someone asks which is best for metal Quote

Phil Starr Posted July 11, 2017 Posted July 11, 2017
Leather.
Brilliant I build cabs. I've got about half a roll of vinyl left but after a couple of years of using acrylic it may never get used unless someone asks me specifically. It's just hard/impossible to invisibly mend and you've then got to treat the cab with kid gloves or accept the road worn look. The acrylic is much tougher than I expected and is wearing well, I haven't needed to touch it up yet but knowing I can is a bonus. Quote
RichardH Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 (edited) Out of interest, which acrylic coating are you using Phil? When I have made cabs in the past I have used Tuffcoat, but I didn't really find it that hard wearing - though easy to touch up. Edited July 12, 2017 by RichardH Quote
ubit Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 Slightly away from your question. You are making a great decision. They are superb cabs. The best I have experienced anyway! Quote
naxos10 Posted July 14, 2017 Author Posted July 14, 2017 Hi Guys, Thanks for all the advice. I have placed an order with Alex for a Two10 with acrylic finish, also gone for the cab cover just in case and even ordered the T-Shirt (well it is my 60th birthday present). Again many thanks for all your replies. Quote
taunton-hobbit Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I've used 'painted' cabs of one sort or another since the early 70's - doings cover out easily & it's all far less hassle than torn tolex or lifting carpet (which always looks damaged) - I'm all for anything that takes the stress out of gigging.............. naxos10 Posted July 14, 2017 Author Posted July 14, 2017 Hi chris b, I will be using an Ashdown Retroglide 800 with a MarkBass Blackline 250 as back up, so I opted for the 4 ohm cab. Quote
naxos10 Posted August 16, 2017 Author Posted August 16, 2017 Well it's arrived and looks rather good in the acrylic finish. This is my 60th birthday present and the guy's at Barefaced included a happy birthday greeting in the packaging - thank guys nice touch. Quote

naxos10 Posted August 16, 2017 Author Posted August 16, 2017 (edited) Ha Ha.... Alex She's sounding fine now and settling in well Edited August 16, 2017 by naxos10 Quote
cgg199 Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Do you mind posting a picture of the acrylic finished 2x10, I don't think I've seen one... Quote
gjones Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 I used to have a reissue, Fender TV15 Bassman. It was the size and weight of a bus but the reason I bought it was the fact that it was covered in tweed cloth. It was a beauty! Does Barefaced offer tweed as an option? Quote
naxos10 Posted August 17, 2017 Author Posted August 17, 2017 cgg199: I'll try to get some pictures together at the weekend. gjones: as far as I am aware the standard finish is Tolex and you can request the acrylic at extra cost. Alex does offer a customizing option on his cabs so drop him an email with what you are looking for. Quote
bertbass Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 I thought that acrylic was the standard option with telex on request. Quote
naxos10 Posted August 18, 2017 Author Posted August 18, 2017 The '10' series cabs have Tolex as standard. All the others have acrylic as the default finish. If this is not true Alex owes me £50 . Quote
