Soulfinger Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Dang, that is some hot stuff. Incredibly tight band, superb charts and that line up is awe-inspiring. You gotta love how AJ gives 110% every time. He´s so into it. Thanks for that vid, Bilbo. Quote
steve-soar Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Here's the grumpy one doing his thing in fine style. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1EcxC5AgnPU&...feature=related I would hate to see AJ's "f*** face". Check out his work with Chaka Khan, the best. Quote
6stringbassist Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Anthony Jackson is one of the worlds top players, a true musician, and I think he invented the 6 string bass as we know it today. I got to see him last year at a masterclass at ICMP with Mike Stern, he comes across as being a bit aloof, but he's not, he's just passionate about his music, and playing, he's a really nice guy. OutToPlayJazz Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Awesome big band in the first clip & the Michel Camilo Trio are utterly fantastic! Thanks for those. Bilbo & Steve! Quote
6stringbassist Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) This is where I saw him http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4qOOapaKtbU His command of the instrument is astounding. When he arrived for the class he was wearing splints or supports on his wrists, I've heard recently that he's had to have surgery on them, he's played 36" scale basses for years, fitted with quite heavy gauge strings and he used to favour quite a high action, he's also sufferred from arthritus for quite some time. He was once sacked from a band, I think it was by Al Jarreau for not standing up to play, and not dancing, his Fodera doesn't even have straplocks fitted. ARGH Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 I like this number http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=I4xKlbeHLf4 classic Quote
ARGH Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Given his absolute focus for perfection, innovation, and sheer refusal to accept constraints and limitations, and lets face it,the 6 string Bass guitar IS the standard instrument for pros these days.......AJ's amazing. And thats not opinion, thats fact. Quote
lonestar Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Thanks Bilbo I really enjoyed that what a player he is. Great Band;Tight as a gnats chuff. Quote

I can't remember the last time I saw anybody with a 6-string bass. It was probably early '90s though. Quote

He looked like he was smiling and having fun...
nice bass playing, but the music was total cheese. i love big band stuff, Jaco's big band arrangements, Joe Zawinul's Brown Street, Music Inc.(Charles Tolliver), Mingus Big band. you get the picture but I think that as a piece of music was pretty soul-less. perhaps the big band equivalent of Kenny G? maybe i'm being to harsh, but regardless of the bass playing, the music doesn't cut it (for me) ;0) Quote

There's no doubting that the musicianship is outstanding but the music left me cold. Quote
Bilbo Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 Its not deep, folks, just a goreat groove and high energy playing. Even jazz musicians can have fun. Quote

alexclaber Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 I love AJ's playing on this kind of latin influenced jazz! Great tone as well. And his array of comedy faces is unparalleled... Alex Quote
wombatboter Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 I still wouldn't be surprised if it would turn out to be Eddy Murphy who would pop up from under Anthony's latex skin disguise... Quote
Bilbo Posted November 4, 2008 Author Posted November 4, 2008 When Jackson toured the UK with Michel Petrucianni, he was about 8-stone. Thin as a rake. Bizarre but he didn't look much like Eddie Murphy (more like a thin Anthony Jackson ) Quote
