The Funk
How does the Q-Tron fare in comparison to the Mu-Tron III? Any experience/ideas/thoughts/advice for someone considering getting a Q-Tron and hoping for the Mu-Tron III sound?
tayste_2000
The Q-tron compared to an original vintage mutron is a pile of crap there is NOTHING as good as the mutron. If you meant a new digital mutron made by haz then buy neither and get a Tone Factor 442 (Red) or an Emma Discumbobulator
Higgie
I've used both, and needless to say, it's the Mu-Tron that I still own. I didn't get to do a direct comparison, but I sold my Q-Tron after getting a Maxon AF-9, and then sold the AF-9 (even though I LOVED it) because I got the Mu-Tron. Just spend a little extra cash on the real thing instead of trying to get imitations of it.
The Funk
Just checking your thoughts guys. The Mu-Tron creator (Mike something or other) recommended either finding a vintage Mu-Tron or getting a Q-Tron (which he designed for E-H). I understand that his recommendation for the Q-Tron might be based on considerations other than sound.
tayste_2000
What ever he was smoking when he designed the Q-tron wasn't anywhere as good as what he was smoking when he designed the Mutron
The Funk
It could be that he couldn't recreate the magic without the other co-creators. Edited July 17, 2007 by The Funk
Toasted
IMHO, the Mutron III is magic and the Qtron + is awful.
Rayman
How does the MXR Auto Q measure up?
tayste_2000
Completely different but I prefer it to the Q-tron. But different sounds completely really
Rayman
I tried the DOD FX25 as you know Steve, I had yours, but I couldn't get on with it. I can't afford Boutique level stuff either, but I just need a giggable filter to use on a couple of songs, nothing fancy, but something with a nice useable downward wah. Would the MXR do that do you reckon? Or maybe a Maxon AF9? Edited July 19, 2007 by Rayman
tayste_2000
Tone Factor 442 is my personally fav. I'd let you come round and try it but its on loan to someone else but I'll let you know when I get it back and you can try it.
Higgie
Rayman I have a Bass Auto Q for sale if you want it. I also have a Chunk Systems 00Funk for sale which has a downward filter on it. Let me know if you want either of them.
Rayman
Yes, I've seen them thanks, I'll give you a shout if I'm interested.

The Funk
Apologies in advance for dragging up a very old thread but I just received a vintage Mu-tron III in the post yesterday morning courtesy of TimmyC. All I can say is bloody hell, that is the sound I have been dreaming of for years. Amazing.

Too smooth (and bassy) for some people but I think it's how a bass wah should sound. If you need a wah with more bite then I'd recommend the Snarlin' Dogs Bootzilla wah - crap on all settings but one, which happens to be absolutely superb.
