gapiro
Hi chaps I'm a pretty occasional double bassist, although would love to do more One of the issues is that near me there is literally 1 double bass teacher, who charges £52 an hour (far outside any budget I have) Been considering the following lessons online: http://www.doublebasscourses.com/p/double-bass-bowing-technique Has anyone any experience of these? Am I right in thinking this is Geoff who does Discover Double Bass too?
philparker
No, it's Lauren Pierce (associated with Geoff) - check out her YouTube videos first and then decide if you wan to enrol? Edited August 5, 2017 by philparker
TheG
Hi gapiro Im near the start of Lauren's Thumb Position Course which is Great! Video and sound is Great and the lessons seem well paced with example pdf's to print out when you want. Excellent value for money. Not far off the price of a single lesson with your double bass teacher. You can see a list of what is involved in the course lesson curriculum. There are sample lessons you can watch. If you enrol in a course you get to be part of Facebook study group page where you can ask questions. AND they offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you aren't into it. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!!!!!!!! Ha ha ha! Go for it!!!

TheG
I would agree that a physical teacher is the best way to go overall yeah. That way you get instant feedback about your playing. Myself I learn through lots of different channels via other musicians, online searching, listening to recordings, trial & error, etc, etc..... I do plan to have some lessons in the future at some point as well by a physical teacher.
neilp
I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to start from scratch with just online lessons. You really need to be guided to how it FEELS when everything is right, and you won't get that from a video. There's so much that can go wrong without you realising, and that could make life impossible further down the line. The basics are vital. As Gary Karr says "playing the bass is either really easy or it's impossible". The basics are what determines which it is!
gapiro
I'm fully aware I really need help with it, just Cambridge has a huge distinct lack of (arco playing) DB players and then only the one teacher I mentioned.... The only other DB player I know who plays arco is a violinist...
