I actually love my job, and if I had any more distractions, I'd never get owt done. Who wouldn't love being hunched over a microscope all day, like today, for instance. Still haven't found my drumming skills yet though... maybe I need x20 eyepieces! By the way Dad, good job this month, my favourite of all your efforts to date. I've got 2 of my 3 sorted. Dad3353
Why, thank you, kind sir. High praise indeed..! Would that others have the same opinion..!
the boy
I've got it down to 5. I'm a bit of a fan of a few of the competitors so naturally they get a place on the leaderboard but there are some really strong entries this month. I'm hurting here. I need to be a big boy and grow a pair.

SimonEdward
Some fine entries this month ... well done to you all. It's not as easy as it looks! The three that caught my ear were the tracks with nicely played/arranged Bass parts
MoonBassAlpha
The most difficult thing is definitely getting started. I find once you've got just any old thing down, the fleshing out process takes on a life of its own, that's why the picture is so useful, it gives that certain nudge. Chiliwailer
The most difficult thing is definitely getting started.
Definitely agree with that. This past month I only had one opportunity to switch on my laptop to record, and I bombed when I did. Even if I had more time, I seriously doubt I could have conjured anything up for this picture as the versatility in me just isn't there. So that said, I really enjoyed listening to what everyone else had done this month, some great ideas and musicality
MoonBassAlpha
Another thing I find about this challenge is that I tend to do it all very quickly (this month's was 1 session of about 3-4 hours, most of that trying to decide what to play on the drums, and how!), and not redoing any of the takes, and when I come to listen again some days or weeks later, it's almost as if I'm listening to work by someone else, which somehow makes it more interesting for me to listen to, as I can't remember much about the process, unlike recording demos with the band, where you get sick of the tune after all the overdubs and tweaking the mix. Is this just me or do others find this too? Apologies for the ridiculously long sentence above btw
Bilbo
I have to confess that I have long since become frustrated with the recording process i.e. vsts, sequencers, drum machines etc and I only put together pieces I can actually PLAY. Hence my composiutions are tending to be limited to the standards of my guitar playing which is pretty poor. I could easily play more complex bass parts but this would rarely work against my weak guitar parts and even weaker percussion. I would love to update my music IT (I am still working with Windows XP so a lot of the modern stuff is incompatible) but there is never enough money, is there, and, when I do come into money, it tends to go on upgarding guitars etc not hard or software. I find that there is an uneasy relationship even a tension between one's ability to compose and one's ability to perform what one composes. The IT available today helps with this, undoubtedly, but I think there are limits depending on what genres we are working with. As I favour genres where sequencing is all but non-existent, I feel that am limited to what I can do with 'real' instruments that I can actually play. My choice, I guess. I really do enjoy these challenges though and don't really mind where I finish up in the voting.
MoonBassAlpha
I'm with you on this - it's the journey, not the destination. Like you, my ideas, especially for the drums, outstrip my ability to perform them by so far. One time I might get our drummer to play on one of them, that should be a quantum leap in performance quality!
Dad3353
My fundamental limitation is my health, which prevents me from playing 'live' most of my compositions. I'm a drummer (or rather, was, nowadays... ), so have few qualms in being able to get that part sorted. My bass and guitar are (were..?) at least reasonable, and some of my offerings in the past have been played 'live', so it can be done, often enough. My keys are rather poor, but I can do things in slow tempos, or double 'em up for more complex chords. The real bugger is the orchestral instruments, as that is what usually springs into my mind, depending on the picture. Even if I had access to trombones and baritone saxes, the racket produced would be worse still than Lenny..! Once I get an idea, though, it usually 'flows' until I stop, often many hours later. A short break for tea or a glass of milk and it's back to the PC whilst I can. As above, I get it all down, then leave it for a few days; when I listen back I, too, sometimes wonder who the heck did all that (and why..!). Occasionally I'll find something that needs tweaking in the mix, or a passage that grates, and so render a new version to be uploaded, but it's rare. Maybe I'm just easily pleased..! Ideally, I'd like to be able to play more 'real' instruments, and hope to do so; until then, I'll do what I can from my 'pica' studio (my armchair...) and watch the votes roll in. To be honest, I do allow myself a touch of frustration when an superb interplay between a subtle drum part and a great bass line go un-remarked, but I'm sure all of us have these same feelings. That was one of the reasons for doing my 'Play Of The Day' posts; to give some recognition to all who took the time and trouble to enter, only to be greeted with what sometimes felt like stony silence. I'll really try to push myself and start that up again. Next month, I promise (if I can... ). Edited July 29, 2017 by Dad3353

I'll listen to some of my tracks months later and start hearing little bits such as some harmonics in a synth that I don't remember putting in but which help to gel everything together. Also, sometimes I'll struggle with a transition from one part to another and I'll find some riser, tremolo trill or something else that just works perfectly and it transforms that part of the track.
