Spoombung
Hi All I'm looking for a 30" short scale bass with active pick ups. I've looked at the Danelectro, the Bronco and a Mustang and they don't really suit me. I considered modifying an SX bass but they don't seem to sell these in the UK. So this has got me thinking about luthiers, of course. Does anybody know someone who can make one here in the UK? - Jazz style body, active pups, 30" scale, jack on the front of the body? neepheid
FYI there is an Items Wanted forum a bit further down the page. It'll be cheaper to get an SX across the pond than it will be to get a UK luthier to build you one and that's a simple fact. The Burpster
Spoony, You might be best splitting this into 2 topics..... 1 asking about luthiers on here...& 2 a seperate wanted one on the wanted section.... That way you'll get best responses to both issues...

The Burpster
Phewww, thats a big question... the one decent uthier that comes to mind is Shuker but he is not cheap - more custom stuff. I'm into pimping existing bodies and necks so I havent 1st hand knowledge of anything UK custom, made yet.... TBH the Neeps suggestion of getting an SX from the US imported and then pimping that would be highly cost effective, certainly when compared to getting one custom made...... Alfie
What is your budget? I can certainly recommend SX basses, I got one earlier in the year and I prefer it to my Fender, however I can't comment on their short scales. I got a short scale last year from Waterstone and it is both beautiful and a delight to play, but the exchange rates being what they are now it probably wouldn't be such a good deal. Difficult to make a judgement on custom build though. I'd have to play an example of someone's work before purchasing. How to the XS basses play? How's the neck profile? The basses look lovely but they don't appear to do a 30". Will they make one especially? I suppose everything's negotiable
Alfie
My SX is a precision and has the classic wide and shallow neck. It plays quick and hasn't had problems with dead spots and hasn't needed any truss rod adjustment If I were to go high end on a short scale I would almost certainly go Gretsch. I reckon Duesenberg are also worth having a look at. They do some juicy looking short scales. I'd like a Jazz style body, maple neck, 24 (smallish) frets, humbuckers, active EQ, jack plug on the front, very narrow nut. The SX sounds good from your description...
