Bigwan
A lot of Youtubers seem to use a hot air gun, freezer spray and a dye application to highlight cracks. Never tried anything like this so wondering if you'd considered something like that?
Bridgehouse
Thanks for the comments all - it's in the airing cupboard (which is hot!) for a few days, then back into the freezer for some more. After that process (I will keep passing it between the two) I'll hit it with a freeze spray and heat gun..
Bridgehouse
Knobs arrived. Knobs are on. That's one done. Just got the relic to finish now
JapanAxe
Although I don't favour the PJ concept, that's a very attractive bass. Can't wait to see the relic!

Bridgehouse
Still currently rinsing and repeating the freezer/airing cupboard cycle at the mo. Mrs B is getting annoyed that the big bag of peas don't fit into the chest freezer
Bridgehouse
A bit of patience does pay off it seems. Freezer for a few days, followed by in front of the fire then the airing cupboard - rinse and repeat... It is subtle, and it's localised at the mo, but Houston, we are getting some natural looking checking. It's remarkably similar to the checking on my 64P.. Bridgehouse
Still quite subtle.. but the front face is crazing quite nicely now..

Bridgehouse
Trying to photograph any of the checking is bloomin' hard! Here it is as a whole (ignore the colour as it's house lighting): If you look really closely you can see some of the checking.. But.. under closer inspection.. Overall, I'm happy with it now, I think. Any more and it would be overkill and just wouldn't look genuine. Lessons learned: - Let the lacquer harden! - Heat and cold. Heat and cold. Heat and cold. Rinse and repeat - Patience! - Black shoe polish makes great false dirt for cracks - Mrs B doesn't like it when she can't fit the peas in the freezer.. Scratchplate screws next, and some electrics. Oh, and I ought to get some pickups really... anyone got a cheap P or J that might work with this? You clearly enjoyed it more than I did! I'll get some daylight shots at the weekend - it looks better in real colours rather than indoor lights

Jimothey
Sometimes people go too far with the relicing but you’ve got it just right it looks great!!
Bridgehouse
Made a start on the plate and fittings.. Jack socket and pots on. Popped the knobs on (but they need aging at some point.) Thought I had enough pickguard screws but I'm three short (d'oh!) - will have to order another pack. Tonight I will have a look at darkening the board.

Just bought a bottle of Tru-oil, so I'm ready to go. A shame to cover up nice wood with paint. Great result you have there, I have one question, did you apply the oil to the fretboard also? Thanks. I masked the board off to do the neck.

Bridgehouse
Been a little while with this one... These relic jobs take a while! Body has stabilised and nitro hardened, so it's on to final assembly. Tuners, bridge and screws aged lightly in vinegar bath and put on. Jobs left to do: - Fit pickups - Wire up - String Tree - Set up Always fancied a mid 60's P but put off by the price? Build your own

Bridgehouse
A quick rub with some leather stain and then a bath in Lenon Oil and look what happens!
Bridgehouse
Ordered some pickups - cheap and cheerful to get it up and running. If it plays well I'll get a set of handwounds made for it.. this one will be vol vol only.

Do it.. it's a lot easier than you think. Plenty of advice on here as well. It's very satisfying. And a lot flippin' cheaper than a real vintage (ask me how I know )
