You see him winding something past the nut where the string gets tuned and if the strings are plucked it makes the high pitched noise he is making. Any idea? I suspect that he's cranking a toy musical box or similar, perhaps to give the impression of playing a vielle, a typical 'folklore' instrument shaped like a lute, with a wheel that scrapes the strings when a handle is turned (think 'hurdy-gurdy'..?).
