BrunoBass
I always loved the Stiff Little Fingers version of Johnny Was. Oh and the Johnny Cash version of One, in my opinion its a much better version than the U2 one. I like covers that step away from the original a bit, not enough to lose the soul but enough for it to be something in its own right.
Most of that whole album (American Recordings IV) improve on the originals I think. Cash lends gravity and power to songs like Desperado, Bridge Over Troubled Water, We'll Meet Again etc, songs which I'd never liked before. A fantastic album. steantval
I'd largely agree with that - although Metallica's cover of the same song is, for me, the go-to version Other notable covers would be The Slits version of Heard it Through The Grapevine... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCr8V5wAroA ...and this surprisingly good version of an AC/DC classic. Bassassin
Bit of an odd one - for me as my thing's typically prog & metal, and also as it's an acoustic cover by an act who aren't "serious" musicians. Australian comedy trio The Doug Anthony Allstars' cover of Hunters & Collectors "Throw Your Arms Around Me". Just gorgeous. Nicko
The great thing about most Dylan covers is they are always very different from his versions , so you've got options
That's probably because no one wants to sound like Dylan. Listening to Jimi Hendrix's live version of Like a Rolling Stone is a semi religious experience for me. Metallica's version of Bob Segar's Turn the Page is awesome. The complete back catalog of Me First and The Gimme Gimmes is also worth a listen.

Hamster
I've listed to this guy several times live doing this song, and although the original is a high bar he really does it justice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usmKAti_Xws
la bam
I watched a band called 'The Hamsters' years ago in Bolton. During their Hendrix set they played All Along the Watchtower, and to this day i can still remember the power of how they played it. Absolutely awesome - real next level stuff. Paul S
The Hamsters were a local SE Essex band - tight RnB, their own stuff is pretty good as well as the Hendrix and ZZ Top covers they do - lost count f how many times I've seen them. Sadly they packed up a couple of years ago. I like this Richie Kotzen cover of Hall and Oates 'Sarah Smile' http://youtu.be/xk5H95iw-5g
Dr.Dave
Sator's version of Abba's 'Ring Ring'. Been doing it for years as a set opener ( with a bit of Cher's 'Believe' chucked in the middle for a laugh). It's on You Tube.
