What's the signal chain for your core tone?

Bass - Amp (set flat)

In fact 9 times out of 10 I DI straight from the bass and don't even bother with the amp.

I've got to say, I've always been the same. Any amp I use is basically for my own amusement as I have always DI'd straight into the desk when recording - however, ever since I started gigging and recording in the late 80s, I've always used basses with active preamps built in (both with and without active pickups) so maybe it would have been different if I had used purely passive basses?

Two setups for me.

1. BASS - Aguilar DB750 - Eden 410

2. (and rapidly becoming rig of choice) BASS - Helix - Pa

The helix is ridiculously good. SVT for rock, GK GB800 for funk, Ampeg B15 for motown, squeaky clean for pop. All at the touch of a foot switch.

Preffered :- Fender Jazz into Ampeg SVT4 Pro into either Berg HT322 or Orange OBC 115 & 210

Mostly used as Ampeg unreliable is my GK 1001RBii head with Berg cab.

I like a touch of compressor too. Ampeg has built in comp. Opto comp with GK head.

Depending on style of music i may use my Fender PJ deluxe.

Hmmm ,,, the signal chain for my core tone?

The head bone connected to the neck bone
The neck bone connected to the shoulder bone
The shoulder bone connnected to the arm bone
The arm bone connected to the wrist bone
The wrist bone connected to the finger bones
Dat tone dat tone dat bass tone
Dat tone dat tone dat bass tone
Dat tone dat tone dat bass tone
Now hear the tone of the bass!

(with apologies to author and songwriter James Weldon Johnson*)

*No, I'd never heard of hime either, but that's why there's Wikipedia

Oh, yes, and the Thunderfunk helps enormously too ... plus a few pedals ... and cabs ... but really, with so much quality kit around these days it's easy to get fixated on the equipment, but the truth is if you play well you'll sound good whatever you are playing through (and vice versa) ... that doesn't mean you have to be a virtuoso musician, but your focus should be on what/how you are playing rather than what equipment you are playing through! ... just my thoughts obviously :)

Rick -> tuner -> OC2 -> VT DI -> Muff -> Small Clone -> Flint -> LM II -> DB210

The core tone is Bass -> VT DI -> Amp. The extra pedals are just extra fun; I'm trying to build a board that covers a lot of ground musically and experimentally with minimum knob twiddling.
