Just bought a Musicman 'Old Smoothie'

I just took delivery of a butterscotch Stingray 'Old Smoothie'. I'm well aware of the quality, playability and awesome sound that Stingrays give - I have four others - but this baby is astounding. It plays like I've owned it for years, the sound is eye-wateringly good and the build quality is all you'd expect from a MM. The preamp doesn't have the aggression available on a 3EQ but for all straight ahead bass sounds it's stunning. I just had to tell some people because the wife has now glazed over.

Congratulations - that looks great, especially in the butterscotch.

I agree with you regarding the slightly less aggressive sound - mine has quite an old school thump to the sound - however I find it still has the trademark Stingray slap sound - perhaps a little less aggressive, as you say than a 3 band. How do you find the slap sound?

Thanks for the comments guys - Hey drTStingray, I'm not much of a slapper but the rounder nature of the sound does make for a more warm & controlled slap sound. I think that with some of the crazy preamps out there slap can get a little too 'zingy', like the instrument's forgotten it's also supposed to be a bass. Just waiting for another Hipshot BT1 to arrive and it'll be on the road by the weekend. Can't wait to hear it through a PA.

It's easier to just let Sterling explain....

Thanks - seems I was being thick, just browsed a front-on pic: https://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/160608298360007-496769--music-man-stingray-40th-old-smoothie-c00982?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0bT_hq_r1QIVLTPTCh1CkwMkEAQYASABEgKTDvD_BwE which shows the strings running between the poles....
Whatever next, eh? :)

Great basses, I have two in the Chocolate Burst finish. The Butterscotch colour looks ace though!
The Chocolate would go well with the Butterscotch, and adding a Cherry burst would really take it up a level.

I'd steer clear of introducing Mint to the mix though.

What a dreadful piece of PR puffery, every word of it scripted, vomit-inducing background music, heart-warming tales of doing good for the benefit of hard-working musicians just trying to feed their families ... euch!

And if the 5-pole idea for a 4-string bass is such a great idea, and was known about 40 years ago ... erm ... why is the marketplace not filled with such basses?

All a bit sad given that it's clearly a very nice bass, though seriously over-priced.

This is mainly due to the plummeting £.

They shot up in price.

Another example - Musicman St Vincent guitar was £1799-1899....

Now....£2229 +

Blimey this thread's gone all grumpy old fella suddenly ........

The bass is devised around a one off prototype from 1976 - i wasn't aware anyone was suggesting all Stingrays should have been like this - it's a limited edition that's been issued in a couple of additional colours.

The marketplace is filled with such basses. On a P and a J bass the strings run between the pole pieces. Same idea executed by Leo years before the Old Smoothie.

Yes, but each string runs between a PAIR of pole pieces.

Where pairs are not being used, then each string passes directly over one of the pole pieces.

This Old Smoothie thingy shares five pole pieces between four strings, which is apparently sufficiently radical for Sterling to wax lyrical about it. So why has no one else done the same thing?

Fender Roscoe Beck bass. IIRC a Bill Lawrence pickup design.
Yup, good call that.

I've had two of these and they are lovely basses ... just WAY too heavy!

I can't think of any others though.
