I went to a youth club with Cait O'Riordon's (bass in the Pogues, now ex-wife of Elvis Costello ) brother. Coincidentally my now brother in law used to deliver papers to Elvis Costello.

I was once held up getting into a practice room in Streatham by the drummer from Razorlight who was parked at the entrance to the car park while he packed up to go. Typical for a drummer to be in the way I suppose, although IME they're normally late coming in :).

Andy Burrows (razorlights' drummer and we are scientists too!) was backing his car out of his parents' drive which was opposite to where I was working. Being sharp of mind I could see my wheelbarrow might be in his way and get flattened by his Vauxhall Astra. I promptly moved it to a safe place, drummers and cars don't mix well.
That's it

A few years ago, after a break,I decided to get back in to playing in a band. I bought an old Trace Elliot 1x15 combo. I thought it would be a good idea to pick up an old flightcase for it off e bay.It used to belong to Sinead O'Connor.....or at least, her bass player. There was loads of labels from airlines, etc on it. It had seen a bit of the world. I decided to use it at a small hotel gig in Pitlochry,Scotland. Lifted it out of my van, which I had to bring as it would not fit in my car.Wheeled it along a bumpy pavement and up a ramp,in to the lounge we were playing in. As it was just after 7pm,there were folk having their evening meal. I pushed it between a few tables,to.....I was going to say,the stage, but it was really just a corner in the room. I misjudged and rammed the flight case right in to the back of some old guys chair, causing him to spill his soup. The guy from behind the bar came over and said ''Get the f***ing thing tae f*** oot of here or your no playing!'' Needless to say,I never used it again and it lay,for a few weeks in my living room. After my wife also telling me to ''get that f***ing thing out of here'' I sold it on ebay.

Drummer from my first ever band was taught by the drummer from the crazy world of Arthur Brown (I am the God of hellfire!). And my drummer in that band was ridiculously good.
That same band went on stage for our first ever gig immediately following a band who had ex Seahorses bassist on bass. I didn't get to speak to him and all these years later can't remember his name.

And I played with Arthur Brown while he was still at Reading University - Blues Plus Brown, as I recall. He was good even back then.

I'm determined to cover his hit! Loved it ever since I was a kid and my dad used to have it on a "best of the 60s" cassette in the car.

Just remembered that I very briefly shared an office with the former bass player from Kenickie. (Anyone else remember them?)

I think she was leaving her position just as I was starting in mine, so I think we overlapped by literally days. By the time somebody else pointed out who she was, she'd sadly cleared off before I got a chance to have a chat about anything bass-related with her!

I met Paul McCartney about 30 years ago and didn't recognise him. Only realised it was the man himself after a mate pointed out how cool/disinterested I'd been in the presence of music royalty. In hindsight it seems really quite odd because he's an extraordinarily recognisable person (although I was most certainly not a fan of either the man or his music at the time, something that has changed significantly since, certainly in relation to his bass playing, musicality and songwriting). Having said this, he appeared not to recognise me either, so the disinterest was mutual :)

In 1977, I was invited to audition for a new backing band, for a new singer signed to Stiff Records. I'd never heard of him, he was a complete unknown with a weird name.............

The audition date clashed with my long awaited driving test date, so I didn't go...........

His name was Elvis Costello...................

Rod Clements of Lindisfarne fame went to the same school as me but he left at the age of 12, 2 years before I was born.

and

At tech college in 1979, I bought a King bass head and 2x15 cab off one of the lecturers - he assured me the cab had once belonged to Chris squire

We had our carpets cleaned on Monday. After the the carpet cleaner saw my bass guitars (and asked my wife if I was well known - oh how she laughed!) he announced he used to be a long term roadie for Yes. Does that count?

It's as tenuous as my YES anecdote so YES it counts :)

I once played a gig with the drummer who played on Lucky Number by Lena Lovitch.

Well if drummers are fair game...

Once in my youth, back in the 80s, after a few beers, I was told that I was drinking with the drummer from Liquid Gold (one hit wonder: Dance Yourself Dizzy) and then proceeded to take the piss out of the tiny shiny gold shorts he wore on TOTP. He stood up to hit a cymbal at a certain point in the chorus which what made me remember them
