LITTLEWING Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 (edited) Our of curiosity and boredom, I cut a slice of foam off a new sponge (don't tell the Mrs) and fashioned a perfect section to fit nicely under the strings by the bridge on my four string Precision as a soft mute. Oh my goodness, I was in Tamla Motown heaven for hours on end. It just opens up a whole new world and adds a new feather to the cap. For the first few seconds it sounds kinda 'whoah' like a set of dead strings but suddenly 'that vibe' kicks in and you're off. Give it a bash, you can thank me later. Maude Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 I really wasn't sure what I was clicking on when I quickly read the title as "The joy of a sponge bath". I've got a cheap precision with some grey packaging foam under the bridge cover and flats, I love playing first generation Ska with it, real old thump. Quote
TheGreek Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 (edited) Great idea....You might want to think about selling some on eBay - oh no, somebody beat you to it... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mute-Aid-Bass-Guitar-Mute-Turn-your-Electric-Bass-into-a-Double-Bass-5-Pack-/222590591527?hash=item33d36ee227:g:ObQAAOSwX61ZC4CF Edited September 2, 2017 by TheGreek Quote

ivansc Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 (edited) My original 62 Precision came with flats and a foam strip factory fitted to the inside of the rear cover. If I remember rightly it looked like neoprene but I am not sure when that was invented! EDIT: Been suggested that Leo & Co used to nip across the street to the nearby Sears & Roebuck and buy rolls of their weather stripping! Could be an old wives tale though... TheGreek Posted September 2, 2017 Posted September 2, 2017 (edited) I have quite a lot of black foam packaging which would be ideal for string mutes - unlikely I'll ever use it - anybody want it? drTStingray Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 (edited) I didn't even bother to cut the one I used on a Stingray a few years back - it was one of those scourers with sponge one side and a thin scourer layer on the top - worked a treat stuffed between the pick up and bridge - and it was blue (rather than the yellow and green ones you often see on the supermarket shelves!!) - matched the colour of the bass.... Great for playing early Elvis stuff like My Baby Left Me and Blue Moon of Kentucky. Edited September 3, 2017 by drTStingray Quote
