The collective age of my band is close to 350 years and lapses of attention and memory are the norm. E.g. : Band leader: Can we please stick to one version of this number. We never play it the same way twice. How we just did it at the end of the rehearsal was nothing like how we did it at the beginning of the rehearsal. How did we do it then? The only people who seem able to actually remember an arrangement are me and Mr Drums, so we invariably end up having to quickly follow whatever detour Mr Guitar and Mr Keys decide to take. Either way, going by the OP's post, by the time they get to writing the end of the arrangement, they would have forgotten how they started it, or indeed if it is even the same tune or tunes. chris_b Posted September 3, 2017 Share Posted September 3, 2017 I prefer we keep to the same arrangement but every now and then an extra chorus or verse can creep in out of nowhere. Doesn't really matter. Your ears should be open and your brain in gear anyway so it shouldn't catch anyone out for more than 2 beats. As old age marches on, I do notice that I play more effectively these days. Well I think so. I play half the notes I used to play when I was a kid. At 57 i'm the 2nd youngest with the guitarist's (70) son at 29 on kys, moothy, gtr, backing vox, and fiddle. He's the talented one in a band of 6. Reading thru this thread i can see all the tell-tale signs and the rehearsals mentioned above are almost a duplicate of what happens with us. And no, it's not about toilet breaks, we can do a 60min set, thanks very much. But only last month we had to call the ambulance out. I seem to go to a lot of funerals these days to see old band mates off but there's a lot of good music to be made by the remainers . For now. Get back from the crematorium to the reception, and put on a gig in memory with all the musos who have attended. Or put on a gig in celebration of the guy who passed, consisting of anyone who knew and/or played with him. In effect a jam night of friends. Latest one is a charity do next January on Syd Barrett`s birthday. Wonder if anyone else will remember to show up? Sadly I dont know how many of us will be left to attend that were contemporaries of Syd and knew him. [/quote] Actually areal problem for me - if I don't wear my glasses then I can focus on the fret board nicely when required (Yeah, I know I shouldn't have to), but can't readthe set list, which is on the floor (even printed A3) - and vice-versa.
