B.Flat
II have been looking (in vain)) to find a MONO amp of around 200+watts to drive a 2 X 8" mid/high box.I really need it to have a small chassis/footprint , not rackmount. I know I am probably out of my tree but could power amp intended for in-car use be used or would the power supply be a problem? If not commercially available does anyone know of any kit builds which might do the job?
HazBeen
Guitar Sound Systems do a cracking 600w power amp. ISP do the Stealth @180w. Quilter does the Toneblock @ 200w, Bose does the PackLite @ 250w If you do no want your bass to sound like a car stereo, don't take your suggestion any further..... Graham
Mono, small footprint, not rackmount http://www.demeteramps.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=62&product_id=92 Not cheap either

Chienmortbb
You are not totally out of your tree but to use a good quality, high power car amp and 12V supply would be expensive and quite bulky. you do not say what the impedance of the cab is but if it is 8 ohm you need to look for an amp rated at 400-500 watts. This is because solid state amps whether Class D or Class A/B reach rated power into 4 ohms and would be closer to half that power into 8 ohms. The ISP amp quoted above is rated at 180 watts peak and 90 Watts RMS into 4 Ohms. Probably well underpowered for your needs. The Bose will be very expensive and as usual with Bose, has no specs as they are intended for use with the Bose PA systems. What pre-amp are you using? Do you want the amp built in?Active Crossover? crez5150
How about a Lucia 240? http://labgruppen.com/view-model/lucia/lucia-240-2m
Happy Jack
Don't mean to derail this thread, but surely any 2-channel power amp with the option to bridge the channels is ... erm ... a mono amp?
Yes and no. The problem with bridging into mono is that it changes the impedance requirements of the cab(s) being driven. A stereo amp capable of driving an 8Ω or 4Ω cab each side will require an 8Ω or 16Ω cab when used in bridge mode. So for one 8Ω cab it's fine, so long as the cab is capable of handling the bridged power, other cabs and combinations may require specialised cables to get the impedance load right. fretmeister
There's plenty of stereo solid state power amps that don't need the unused channel to do anything. I used to run the Yamaha P5000S using 1 side only. Just leave the B channel volume at zero. Perfectly fine as that is what it was designed for. Plenty loud enough. B.Flat
Thank you all responders. What I have not made clear by some of the responses is that size is crucial for me. A 19" rackmount will not do the job. The cab is 4 ohms, 2 x Eminence LA8-CNMB neos'. The Labgruppen looks good but I haven't checked out the price yet. Any more suggestions gratefully received.
The poweramp i use is a KMT DC5 dual channel that goes down to 2ohms in stereo (500W each) and down to 4ohms (1000W) in bridge mode. It's class-H so no lack of heft and only 1U rack size. It's a bit heavy mind.
bazzbass
you want a mono bass amp. Pretty sure most of them are mono..... buy a small bass amp, plenty of them out there, TE Elf, Markbass Nano etc
B.Flat
To clarify I am wanting a powered cab, not a stand alone amp. I have limited space to put it and using one side of a rackmount stereo amp will not fill the bill. I think the GK 200 MB might do, the Demeter would definitely be OK, but I is out of my price range
Dan Dare
Why not pick up a used Class D bass head and use it as a power amp. You can connect it to your main head or preamp via the FX ins/outs, bypassing the input section. I did this with a Bugera Veyron head, driving it from my Aguilar and it worked fine. Chienmortbb
So do you want. To make your cab in to a powered cabinet? That is not difficult. I am happy to do it for you for a nominal fee. What is your budget and timescale? Edited September 6, 2017 by Chienmortbb
B.Flat
OK, all responders, I have been guilty of expecting you all to be mind-reading clairvoyants, apologies ! I thought (stupidly) less parameters would be less confusing. So the over all project is this. I have the 2 x 8" enclosure. There is compartment at the back (at pres. a leads and odds and sods store) approx. 35cms wide, 13cms high &15cms deep. It is into this space I am hoping to fit power amp of around 200-500watts @4 ohms, no eq. but may be a HPF. Why didn't I say that in the first place???? Can it be done ?
