P/J - they are both single coils (albeit split P). Is it worth trying a series/parallel switch? Anybody else tried it?

The J volume pot needs replacing and the jack socket is a cheap Squier one, so I'll be sorting the whole loom out anyway.

Yup, I like having the option there. It adds a bit of level and depending on the pickups often extra low mids and maybe slightly less top end when going passive. Active electronics will often counteract that effect which can be noticed if you have a circuit that has a true bypass active/passive switch.

I might just give KiOgon a shout when I've found out if the knobs are split shaft or splines

I may very well do the same, just picked up a cheap Squier PJ for a backup and that mod sounds handy...
